It's a serious question in the guise of a joke. Probably very, very transparent. Oh, hell, she knows it's transparent.

But she's curious. Aside from what she's found out from paperwork and research, she feels out of the loop. It doesn't take a psychiatrist to tell that this case matters to her new boss. A lot.

"At least tell me what the real story behind this guy is," she says, more seriously now.

"You're still too low," he jokes back, in that harmless way grizzled veterans do.

He's also not sure if he wants to go into the whole story. It's an ugly little thing.

"But if you've picked up any ways around an insanity defense, I'd be glad to hear them and see if they apply."

Sonia frowns. "I don't know. Serial rapist... it ought to be obvious he's guilty as hell. But something tells me they'll be all too willing to just throw him in Arkham and forget all this." She wrinkles her nose. "Insanity my ass. Insanity doesn't cover repeated offenses like this."

She wishes her legalese was better. Wishes she could be out there investigating, doing something she's good at.

"Exactly. There's no way that insanity should stand up in court, with this kind of situation. But in my day, it always stood up just fine, if you knew who to pay off. That's the worry. I might have you start sniffing around, see if you can find any sign of graft going on..."
