All I have to do....

Family troubles. Definitely plural. That's what got her into this. If she had reconciled with her father, would Raven have been able to find her? If Raven had not been the daughter of Trigon, if Mar'i's own father had not seen his parents murdered, if Komand'r had not sold Koriand'r into slavery, if Thomas and Martha Wayne had not been gunned ( Read more... )

Nightstar stumbles back, feeling dizzier than she has since she first mastered acrobatic flight. Easy contact, but not easy communication. She'll try another sibling.

In her dream Mar'i sees the most beautiful ... person she can imagine. She recognizes this person from the portraits she saw in the dreaming. Still neither male nor female, in an achingly sweet voice it speaks.

Can I help you, young one? I see you have many desires at this time, is this what you seek assistance with?

"Uh...." Mar'i fumbles for words. "I'm, uh, Night. Nightstar. I--I work for your brother Dream."

Ma'ri Grayson turns a corner, and Destiny is there. He reads from his book as she approaches.

"And now you are here, as you always are at this time."

And Destiny also walks in his garden, reading his book, and looks up at the heroine with empty eyes.

"And you are here, yet I have no note of it."

He flips through his pages, searching for her name.

She gives him a respectful salute. "My lord, I am called Nightstar. At my birth I was named Mar'i Saldja of the House of And'r. I am the bound servant of your brother the Dream-king."

"Are you," says Destiny. It's not exactly a question. As the oldest of the Endless consults his book, another iteration of him walks by, also consulting his book.

"Paths are diverging, Mar'i Saldja of the House of And'r," says the new Destiny.

Yet another iteration of Destiny stands ahead of the other. "Some paths are closed forever," he says. "Their presence erased from the book."

The first Destiny looks up again at his counterparts, then back at his book. "Whya have you come to this place, Mar'i Saldja of the House of And'r, also named Mar'i Grayson, also named Nightstar. You are not here at this time."

She looks around, confused. "Why are there so many of you?"

The young woman is sitting, calm and serene to the side of the path.

Hello, Mar'i. I hope you know what you're doing.

"Um, hello?" Mar'i smiles nervously. "I'm not sure I know you, ma'am."

She smiles.

You don't. You only met me once, but you don't remember.

I meet everbody twice, sooner or later. Some very, very exceptional people get to meet me more than that.

You, for example. Or Ib'n.

Mar'i instinctively hovers. "Who are you?"
