Jack leaned back in the coffee shop booth, listening to the news reports on the Television set behind him.

His bagel with cream cheese and lox untouched in front of him.

"I wonder if there are any good places for lunch in Gateway City."

A wave of shadowy matter coalesces in the chair opposite Jack at a moment when nobody is looking, and suddenly the Shade is there.

Jack put down his cup of coffee as the shadow began to coalesce in his booth, thankful that he wasn't surprised enough to have it snort out of his nose while he was drinking ( ... )

Jack, my boy, you have your own set of worries and problems. I can deal with this, I am quite certain. I just wanted to put your fears at rest before I got down to brass tacks.

If any from the cape and tights set come along looking for my head, direct them to Matthew O'Dare, who will confirm that he was having brunch with me at the time of the first theft in Seattle.
