While the team is away, other members of the JSA have remained behind. One in particular received a visitor who has a "rotating" sort of admission.

And he's not happy at the moment.

"Do you know...no. That's a stupid question. I know you do. But you want to tell me one good reason why there's been no change yet ( Read more... )

With his teammates and daughter off fighting one of the world's most dangerous men, Alan himself isn't that happy. The fact that his nose is twice its normal size and roughly the color of a concord grape doesn't help his mood. "Normally I'd be happy to see you, old friend, but right now I have to ask...what the devil are you talking about?"

"Normally I'd be making more of a social call. But Wendi's at home and has to be sedated just to get any sort of sleep. She breaks into tears each time the phone rings, thinking that its someone telling us that we lost our son."

Rex rubs on his forehead, showing off an impressive amount of grey hair. "For God's sake, Alan...we can't live like this. There has to be something here to help."

Alan rubs his face and immediately winces. Bad move. Sighing, he replies, "Rex, if I had any notion about why there's been no change...I didn't even realize there hasn't been news. Blast it, I'm sorry. I've been spending too much time focused on having Terry Sloan..."

A sour expression crosses Alan's countenance, and he exhales again. "Look, let me see what I can find out. Pieter is off with the team right now, but someone must be able to give us some information."

His face goes ghost-white, just staring at Sentinel. "Terry's dead, Alan. And if someone doesn't do something, besides wait for nurse's aides my son is going to join him. Jesus...what if it was Todd? What if it was Jennie? You'd tear this universe apart looking for a way to fix them."

Rex stops to collect himself, reaching into a nearby satchel. "But...this might help. I don't know, its...early. Untested, but...its something." He produces a shining brown and gold orb, grasping hold tightly.

Terry Sloan stands alone in his holding area, a piece of chalk in his hand and covering the wall with scribbles, diagrams, and formula.

"You two shouldn't bother being quiet. Alan, you tend to crackle when powered up. And your guest is...strangely heavy." He turns to face them, taken by slight surprise.

"....Rex?"

"It's true then." The elder Hourman moves forward, the recent events having dulled his senses. "I don't...you. I don't know. I don't care. You're you. Again." Rex squints some, taking a better look at his teammate.

"I've got a long story with Black Adam, a robot, and an hour in time for my explanation. How's about you?"

"A Lazarus Pit, some foolishness with Roger Romaine, and the rest is under a political dogpile. But you're with the Old Power here, so obviously you've something that you want." Sloan places down his chalk before pulling a chair up.

"Gentlemen, what may I do for you?"

"Not for us," answers Alan, absorbing that response Terry just gave to Rex, "but rather for someone else. Someone who's never hurt you and who needs your assistance."

"To be honest, I'm kind of flattered." Sloan begins, an hour after their discussion. Having had enough time to pour through the files and two medical textbooks on cardiology, he's in the midst of scrubbing himself in.

"The procedure being done today is a ventricular assist. I'll be taking the cardiac enhancer, and using it as a shell of sorts to the previously damaged organ. I'm amazed that its been able to last this long seeing the extent of the damage done."

He continues. "Its a testament to just what this team has done...in my absence, and the wonders of modern science. You don't have to stay powered up, however." Giving a sideways look to Sentinel, he keeps on. "Chuck himself would be amazed at what your MidNite has done here. Perhaps a little jealous."

"Flattery will get you nowhere, Mr. Sloan," comes the voice of their Mid-Nite, returned from New Albion. "But it's appreciated nonetheless."

He's quickly prepping for the procedure as well, always efficient in movement.

"Doctor...Midnite." Sloan gives a slight nod, keeping his hands aloft before entering the surgical theater.

"I trust you've seen the charts. Would you prefer to take point here, or advise?"

"Pieter can oversee this. He'll assist just the same. He's here to correct any of your mistakes if needed. I'm here to step in in case you need to be taken down."

Michael Holt's voice comes over the loudspeaker, addressing the men inside. "But Mr. Terrific? We're trusting you to save our friend. Go with that."

She can't stop fidgeting. Tapping the fingers, the toes, shifting in her seat, crossing her legs one way and then the other.

Tiny green flames are dancing from one finger to the other, as Jennie tries to keep herself occupied during what is bound to be a long surgery.

A surgery she has a vested interest in.

"Miss...Miss...you're Alan's girl, right?" The older man a few seats down from her leans to the side and offers something. "Here. Usually Jay and the guys frown down on this but. You look like you could use a nerve calmer."

He opens his hand, showing an hourglass engraved flask.

She reaches out for the flask with flame-entwined fingers, extinguishing them before grabbing the small bottle.

"Thanks, um... I really appreciate it." As she uncorks it and takes a deep draught of whatever's inside, a sigh escapes her.

"I'm Jenny. I'm sorry, you look really familiar..."

"I am too. I haven't seen a gal take Jim Beam down like that since Joanie Dale." He gives a bemused face to her shot. "I'm Rex Tyler. And I'm just a bit overwhelmed. That's three legends down there working on my son." He rubs his hands together.

"They're using something I created. A casing that should help his valves pump like they should. So I guess I'm in there in spirit, right?"
