"Forgotten" -- Epilogue Five

There is an aspect of Fate's Tower that Hector Hall keeps resembling a relatively normal-looking apartment: A few bedrooms, a kitchen, a study, a living room with a large-screen TV and (don't tell the JSA) an XBox. This helps keep Hector Hall -- not Dr. Fate -- grounded

There's a polite cough from the doorway.

"Wow. I haven't heard singing that bad since ..."

She stops and thinks about it.

"I've never heard singing that bad.

Lyta Hall smiles coyly at her ex-husband, arms folded.

"Lyta," he says, startled. "Hi. I didn't ... I guess the tower let you in?"

He knows the tower lets her in unhindered, so long as she's not possessed or something. It's that it doesn't warn him that's his problem.

"Yeah, uh, just doing some cleaning. Been away awhile, with the JSA."

"I heard. Got the emergency bulletin from Firebrand a bit late. By the time I was able to respond, they'd already left."

She throws herself onto the couch, picks up the remote control, and turns down his stereo as it transitions in "End of the Party."

"She said to leave it till the end of the party
Do it now, you know there's never a next time
How come the feeling that it's only just started
Pull back your cover, I could love you for all time
But do it now, you know there's never a next time."

Her smile remains fixed. He's terribly amusing her right now.

"You know, they're touring with 311 right now. Reviewer pissed me off when he said they were 'surprisingly' good. That's a sign I'm getting old, isn't it?"

"Happens to the best of us," he says, sitting on the recliner across from her. "I started ranting when I heard Iggy Pop being used to sell a cruise line. Gemma nearly died laughing."

It's all smiles, but Hector can't help but note the distance they keep between themselves.
