The Forgotten West

May 06, 2007 15:59

The town is called "Clearwater." A more apt name might be "Hell."

The clear spring nearby is filled with sludge from silver mining just outside of town. The town - such as it is - is there for one reason only: To help the men of the mines spend money which is siphoned off to somewhere else. Any idea of "claim," or "justice," is settled in one of two ways - fist or gunfire. Most here are veterans of Bleeding Kansas, Spanish-American War, or the myriad of conflicts that marked the West's growth to the hills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is as if some force draws them from places like Tombstone or Dodge City to this evil place to create a sinkhole of human misery where a thousand brutal and broken men thrive.

Almost a century from now, this will be a place dedicated to peace. For those caught in the flow of time and whims of fate and magic, this place is anything but. Great evil resides here, feeding on the chaos and feelings of isolation.
