"You see a lot of things when you're down in the dirt," says Firebrand. She glances at Terrific, making sure that she's allowed to continue down this narrative, and when he nods affirmatively, she continues.

"I was looking for The Society. More to the point, I was looking to find the people who hire them. Big time scumbags with lots of money. The ( Read more... )

"You did the right thing, Firebrand," says Michael, his voice low and steady. "I don't know what Degaton's up to, but it's time to bring him down."

"So what's our first step, boss? Full frontal, or sneaky?"

"We're going sneaky until we have to get loud," says Terrific. "Firebrand's got another mission here tht we can't compromise, so we're going to do a recon on the warehouse, find out who's doing the weapons gathering, and where all those weapons are going."

"Agreed," says Firebrand, who hits a button on her bracelet that creates a holographic schematic of the warehouse. "I'm downloading this to your computer array, Terrific."

She points to a second basement level.

"There's been work done here, but I'm pretty sure this is where things are being kept. Courtroom-quality evidence to put these people in jail for arms trafficking would be best, but annihilation of the arsenal works, too."

A short while later, at a warehouse on the outskirts of Vegas, two security guards armed with strangely futuristic laser rifles maintain a vigil on the roof. One spies out at the desert with high-tech binoculars, while the other makes a regularly-scheduled security report.

"All clear," says the soldier into a wrist communicator. He flicks it off and turns to his partner. "Not like we ever see much of anything up here."

The other soldier clicks off his binoculars and shrugs. "Hey, we did have those two not long ago. It's made the boss twitchy. More than one super type at a time means others are coming."

"Yeah," says the soldier. "But it's been a few days. I think we're in the clear."

And as he says it, a gloved fist collides square with his head.

Mr. Terrific is behind the fallen soldier, his T-spheres interfering with electronic surveillance ... his own immunity to surveillance allowing him to get this close.

"One down," he says levelly, as the panicked soldier draws his gun.

Before he can fire, he hears a step behind him. He whips around...and is met with a cloud of sleep gas. Within seconds, he's unconscious.

Sand touches a button, switching the guns function from sleep gas to standard. "I love the classics."

The T-Spheres spin in the air and then dart in all directions, beaming Terrific a constant stream of surveillance so they're not taken by surprise.

"Oh yes. So which of us gets to be Bond?" he quips, voice low, as he opens the access hatch and begins to descend into the warehouse.

When Mr. Terrific and Sand awaken, they find themselves in a stockade with clear but nearly invulnerable walls.

They are wearing electronic collars.

"Where are we," says Terrific, stirring to find Sand in the cell beside him. The cells are translucent, allowing each of the prisoners to see one another, but it's too dark to make out more than two other outlines -- one male, one female. He blinks to adjust his eyesight, adjusting to the darkness.

"You're in the worst place on Earth," says the woman, moving to the edge of her cell to be visible. "A place where heroes die, and are then forgotten."

"I still hold out.. -tkt- hope, Moon Maiden."

Stepping forward into the light is a familiar face - Tyler, AKA Hourman.

"Hello, Michael. It is good to.. -tkt- see you again."

The android's movements seem sluggish.
