I've gotten a few R.A. Salvatore recommendations and I've read a few, but something about his writing style always feels repetitive and over-focused on the little things to me. As if I'm always waiting for him to get to the point.

I do have fond memories of the fantasy books I went through as a kid too though, all the Forgotten Realms, Warhammer and Discworld.

He's not an awesome writer, it's more a case of liking the subject matter enough to ignore it. (Happens a lot to me with _bad_ gay fiction, I try anyway.)

I never got into Discworld, though I heard it was good. And I don't even remember the Warhammer ones, though I have played the RPG for it.

Yes, agreed, sometimes you have people who you know aren't great authors, but there's something about their stories, whether it be plot, or fun, that means you can enjoy them anyway.

Or they write in a very, very small sub-genre that no one else writes for.
