Last night, the Friday night gaming group came out to continue their on-going campaign of the
Atlantis: The Second Age RPG of sword & sorcery fantasy in the Antediluvian world. You can read about the
previous session by following the link. This post is extremely long, so I've put it behind a cut so that folks who don't want to read any detailed rpg posts don't have to.
CHARACTERS:
Sahauviia the Green (Kathy) - Atlantean Sorceress
Koomara Hadansi (Angela) - Galacean Scavenger
Melucene Palleremos (Ellison) - Hesperian Priestess-in-Training
Vaino the One-Eyed (Mark) - Cimmerian Adventurer
Uratan of Pemba (Peter) - Asena Pemban Scout
28th Kislimu, Year 506 Meta Kataklysmos (M.K.)
The player Heroes wake after getting several hours of rest [they each lose 5 Renown for having taken the time for personal matters, rather than pursuing Karassi immediately]. After cleaning up and eating a hearty breakfast in the inn's common room, the player Heroes gather up their belongings they intend to take with them, and Simba leads them down into the Golden Horizon's basement cellar. He shows them the locked and sealed entrance down to the Undercity, and with the help of Vaino the One-Eyed and Koomara Hadansi proceeds to open the entrance. As the door swings open, a nasty smell of feces, sewage, and other unidentifiable odours greets the player Heroes. They do not gag or vomit, but both Melucene and Sahauviia come close [the players each succeed at a CON + Resolve check]. The player Heroes check to make sure they have everything they intend to take with them and that it's in good working order, and led by Uratan of Pemba step through and into the Chersonopolis Undercity.
The player Heroes find themselves in a seemingly natural underground hallway filled with vegetation, animal droppings, and a dim light that appears to be a form of bioluminescence. Uratan defers to Koomara, who takes out a map that she bought of the Undercity the day before [she spent 1 Hero Point and had to make a WR check with a DoD of -7 for it]. Sahauviia the Green casts a simple light spell and Uratan lights a couple of torches, and hands one to Melucene Palleremos. Following Koomara, the player Heroes set off in search of one of the main thoroughfares of the Undercity, since they need to ask questions of some of the folks who live down below. The player Heroes talk quietly as they travel, keeping an eye out for danger or any other signs of life. It is Koomara who senses movement in the tunnel, and spots a figure watching them from the shadows. As the figure prepares to run away, it is Uratan who races forward and grabs the figure by its ratty clothes.
Bringing the figure towards the other characters, despite the piteous female whine that comes from it, the player Heroes see that the figure is a girl of around 13 years of age or so, with brown hair and green eyes, wearing dirty, ragged clothes, and with a small knife looped through her belt. The filthy figure stares wildly at the player Heroes, begging them not to hurt her. When asked, she tells Melucene that her name is Jeddy, and that she's one of the people who lives in the Undercity. Melucene asks her what she's doing there, but Jeddy is elusive at first though she finally admits that she was asked to keep an eye out in this part of the Undercity for a group of people matching the player Heroes' description. She tells them that she doesn't know who asked her to do so, but they wore a dark robe with embroidery of a serpent motif and that they paid her a Gold Lotus, with a promise of more. Asked if she thinks the person who approached her was a member of the Cult of Set, the frightened Jeddy looks around and then nods her head. Jeddy agrees to lead the player Heroes to where the person gave her the job of finding the Heroes, in exchange for a half loaf of bread and some cheese (which she scarfs down rather quickly), and the player Heroes follow Jeddy through the tunnel, keeping an eye out for danger. The player Heroes attempt to draw Jeddy out, but all they learn is that the girl's mother was killed in the city above ground and that her father proved to be of no assistance. She took to living on the streets, but when that didn't work out, she came down into the Undercity.
The player Heroes continue to follow Jeddy through the Undercity, Koomara trying to keep track of where they are on the map that she has. As they round a corner, several shadowy, grubby-looking humans and a filthy Asena run past the group, shouting about the "snakes are on the loose!" Before the Heroes can react, a group of five ruffians, wearing light leather armour and bearing daggers and short swords, come after the player Heroes. Both Sahauviia and Koomara are able to make out the snake tattoos on their left arms. Shoving Jeddy behind them, the player Heroes prepare for the attack as one of the ruffians attacks each Hero. With no time to cast a spell, Sahauviia is forced to defend herself with her staff. She is able to take down her opponent after three rounds, but not before suffering a couple of gashes to her left arm and leg respectively [for 6 Hit Points on both attacks, though she spends a Hero Point on each attack to reduce the damage down to 2 HP from each attack]. Koomara quickly takes down her opponent, suffering no damage as her speed and agility allow her to strike down her foe with two clean blows. Using her short sword and recent combat training from Vaino and Uratan, Melucene is able to strike down her foe relatively quickly using her short sword. In a quick but brutal display of his combat abilities, Vaino strikes down his opponent in two quick blows [spending 1 Hero Point to get a bonus to the first attack]. For some reason, Uratan holds back against his foe, almost as if the Asena scout is toying with the ruffian. However, eventually he succeeds in striking the death blow, killing the man. And with that, the fight is over.
The player Heroes check out their condition, seeing that only Sahauviia suffered any injuries in the fight. Dismissing her injuries, the Atlantean sorceress asks if any of their attackers are still alive. Koomara and the others go and check on the bodies, but find that none of them are alive. While looking at one of the bodies, Koomara is shocked as the serpent tattoo on the dead man's arm *moves* and attempts to shift onto her body. She successfully dodges its attempt [making a roll of DEX + Evade, and spending 3 Hero Points on the attempt], and the "tattoo" disperses into the air after its failed attempt. She explains what happened to the others, and Sahauviia does some checking on the bodies. The body she checked, which was also that of her attacker, is the only one that radiates some magic that seems related to Set, but that it is dissipating even as she looks on. Sahauviia is disappointed that none of their attackers is alive, since they could have interrogated them if they were. The Heroes turn their attention back to Jeddy, who is looking on from her concealment at the edge of the tunnel. When Melucene comes to her, she tells the Hesperian priestess that she's all right, and tells the Heroes that she'll take them to where she met her contact. Uratan talks to the others for a moment, and then Melucene and Koomara ask Jeddy to show them her arms and body. Jeddy is somewhat hesitant at first, but eventually does. There is no sign of a mark of Set on her body that they recognise. Jeddy continues to lead the player Heroes into the Undercity, Koomara continually trying to keep track of their path on the map she has.
The player Heroes and Jeddy finally reach what appears to be an almost main concourse of the Undercity, various individuals being seen going about their business and torchlight being everywhere. Jeddy leads the Heroes to a location near what appears to be a crevice in the rock and says this was where she met her contact. She warns the player Heroes to be careful, as pickpockets are common down in the Undercity and to watch out for the gangs, some of the disenfranchised who've banded together in groups and can be dangerous. With that, she runs off into the tunnel and away from the player Heroes, who are left on their own. Koomara is mindful of the fact that they could still use the girl's help, but the other deter her from going after her. Sahauviia tells the others they need to split up into groups to question some of the Undercity denizens and see what they can learn about the Cultists of Set. Sahauviia goes off with Uratan, and Vaino teams up with Koomara and Melucene, and the two groups agree to meet here again in one hour.
After splitting up, Sahauviia and Uratan talk to several groups of people and some individuals, but while they acknowledge the presence of the cultists in the Undercity are too frightened to tell the Heroes anything else about them. The two head back to the rendezvous point together. Uratan has the feeling that they are being watched, but fails to spot anyone. Sahauviia says she is taking no chances, and magically puts up a [5 pt.] shield around herself. Elsewhere, Koomara, Melucene and Vaino talk to other denizens of the Undercity, having little success at first due to the fear that the dwellers have of the Cult of Set. However, finally Melucene is able to connect with another couple of denizens, telling them they are searching for a friend of theirs who was taken by the cultists, and the two take pity on the Heroes and tell them what they know of the Cult of Set in Chersonopolis. [Melucene succeeded at two rolls of her CHA + Influence with Critical Successes on two different groups and individuals. She gained a Hero Point as well.] The Cult is very secretive in all of Hesperia, but especially in Chersonopolis, given the relationship between the Hesperians and the Gorgosians, and they operate from a small "base" they've established in the Undercity. There are a total of 25 Cultists who dwell down below, including their High Priestess, Jessera. They tend to use the Undercity dwellers as a labour force, though they pay them in money or goods that the people need to survive, but they are also used at times for sacrificial purposes, so the Undercity dwellers tend to be afraid of them most of the time. The Cultists are also known to kidnap people from the city proper for nefarious purposes as well, but their goals and purposes are largely to do with Set though their personal interests also come first. One of the individuals, who has been to their base, gives the player Heroes a good, detailed route to the base of the Cultists.
Once the player Heroes meet up at the rendezvous point they arranged, they discuss what they've learned. Koomara tells the others that based on the instructions for the route they should take to the Cultists' base of operations, she should be able to get them there safely and in good time. But Koomara tells them that according to the map of the Undercity that she has (assuming that it's accurate), the portion of the Undercity they are heading for is one that is relatively abandoned and off the beaten paths, so to speak. Vaino says this merely means they have to be prepared for anything they might encounter there. Koomara estimates it will take them some 25 minutes to travel to their destination. Melucene asks the others what they're waiting for, but Vaino tells her that they need to exercise some caution. Karassi's life and that of her unborn child depends on them being cautious but rescuing her from the cultists. The player Heroes set out, confident that they will be able to rescue Karassi.
After some fifteen minutes of travel through the Undercity, encountering very few people, the player Heroes find themselves in a portion of the underground realm that seems almost natural in its architecture and feel, Uratan telling the others that this part of the Undercity reminds him of some ruins in Hellas that he's travelled to before. Vaino warns the others to be on the alert. Uratan tells the others after a bit that he thinks he's seen shadowy figures flitting on the edges of the caves and tunnels, but that he's not sure about what he's seen. The player Heroes slow their pace somewhat, moving ahead more cautiously, and then they see it: a dark, shadowy being with an almost aetherial ability resembling a humanoid shape, with clawed hands and very dark red eyes.
The player Heroes have no idea what the creature is [it is one of the Dark Abandoned], but it radiates sheer malevolence as it moves towards them. With Melucene and Uratan paralysed with fear [they both fail their WIL + Resolve checks, but the others succeed at theirs. They each lose 1 Hero Point], Sahauviia, Koomara and Vaino are forced to deal with the creature. Sahauviia attempts to shield herself but fails, and takes a more cautious approach. Koomara and Vaino attack the creature with their weapons but the creature is too fast for them, and easily avoids their attempts. The creature attacks Koomara, inflicting a minor wound to her that her armour does not protect her from [she suffers 4 Hit Points of damage, and spends a Hero Point to absorb it], and the fight continues. Both Koomara and Vaino land several blows against the creature, inflicting damage to it and seemingly weakening it, but are horrified to see that it appears to regenerate some of the damage they have done! They are both worried that they cannot kill the creature (if indeed it can be killed). The creature lands two serious blows to Vaino, destroying his armour and inflicting some serious injuries [he suffers two wounds of 6 and 5 Hit Points respectively, and spends an Earth Hero Point to negate 8 points of the damage], but it only Koomara's speed that keeps her unscathed by the creature's attack. The two are forced to retreat, keeping the immobilized Uratan and Sahauviia protected from the creature. Sahauviia finally recovers, and hearing the shouted entreaties of her two allies uses her magic to attack the creature, striking it with 2 blasts of fire [she spends 4 Hero Points on the attack, and 1 Fire Hero Point on the damage, inflicting 30 points of damage to the creature], destroying the creature in a flaming inferno. The Heroes catch their breath, and go and check on Uratan. He finally recovers, and is embarrassed about what happened [and loses 5 Renown points].
Checking on the condition of the player Heroes, Melucene does her best to treat the injuries suffered by Vaino and Koomara [healing them each of 2 Hit Points of damage], and the player Heroes take stock of their situation. The group travels on a slight distance, moving away from where they fought the creature, and Koomara tells them they are getting close to where she believes the Cultists of Set have their base. It is decided that Uratan will scout ahead to check out the situation, while the player Heroes take cover in a relatively large fissure off the main tunnel. Uratan moves off as quietly as he can, and goes to scout the situation. He finds the part of the tunnels where the Cultists of Set have their base, narrowly avoiding detection. There is a door of relatively recent construction that has two robed cultists standing before it wearing light armour and armed with their snake-shaped nasty looking swords. Making his way back to where the player Heroes are concealed, Uratan tells them what he has found. The player Heroes make their plans for getting into the Settite base of operations.
Friday evening's session of the
Atlantis: The Second Age RPG campaign was a pretty good one, though I found the session somewhat rough to run as I hadn't run the game in two months and I felt somewhat...rusty for a while. The session had a bit of everything for the player Heroes to deal with, and some wonderfully iffy moments. The fight near the end of the session with the Dark Abandoned was, according to the players, very scary and they had their doubts they were going to be able to defeat it, and Peter told me that the entire time in the Undercity was quite evocative of some horror and he told me that he really enjoyed that element of the session. They debated for a bit how they plan to get into the Cult of Set's base, but decided to leave matters until the next game session. Mark lamented the loss of his armour during the fight with the creature of darkness, but I reassured him that he'd be able to find something, though it might not fit his character's pectorals all that well. :)
Overall, Friday night's session of the on-going
Atlantis: The Second Age RPG campaign was a good one, and the players are quite looking forward to the next session in a couple of weeks. So am I! :)
