On Friday night (the 13th), the Friday night gaming group came out to continue their on-going campaign of the
Atlantis: The Second Age RPG of sword & sorcery fantasy in the Antediluvian world. You can read about the
previous session by following the link. This post is extremely long, so I've put it behind a cut so that folks who don't want to read any detailed rpg posts don't have to.
CHARACTERS:
Sahauviia the Green (Kathy) - Atlantean Sorceress
Koomara Hadansi (Angela) - Galacean Scavenger
Melucene Palleremos (Ellison) - Hesperian Priestess-in-Training
Vaino the One-Eyed (Mark) - Cimmerian Adventurer
Uratan of Pemba (Peter) - Asena Pemban Scout
8th Arakhsamna, Year 506 Meta Kataklysmos (M.K.)
Sahauviia the Green warns the others of the basic abilities of skull spiders, having encountered them several times in the south of Atlantis, though she's puzzled as to their presence in Galacea. Koomara Hadansi quickly tells her that perhaps they serve the spider folk in some capacity. Before they can continue their discussion, Vaino the One-Eyed points out that they have to deal with these large spiders *now* rather than talk about them; that can wait for later. Uratan of Pemba agrees, and attacks the skull spiders; he skewers three of them with arrows, killing them instantly, the purple blood of the creatures flowing all over. [He rolled two Critical Successes, and also spent 2 Hero Points on the attacks.] As one of the creatures scuttles towards Sahauviia, the Atlantean sorceress kills it with a bolt of arcane energy [she spends 3 Hero Points to boost the attack, and 2 to boost the damage]. Koomara and Melucene Palleremos are attacked by a couple of skull spiders, and defend themselves [having to use a Hero Point each to absorb damage] and then use their weapons to quickly finish off the two creatures [spending Hero Points again for both the attack and the damage]. Koomara suffers a spider bite to her left arm during the fight, and takes minor damage from it [the bite does 4 points of damage, but also causes her to suffer from nerve paralysis and a fever for some time.] Attacked by two of the larger creatures, Vaino cuts through the webbing that the spiders spit at him, and then attacks the two of them with his battle axe, cutting the two creatures to pieces [he spent 2 Hero Points on additional damage, after putting a pair of Hero Points into the attacks as well]. The fight comes to an abrupt end with the player Heroes covered in some of the purple blood and gore from the creatures, but otherwise, with the exception of Koomara, unharmed by the skull spiders.
In the aftermath of the fight with the skull spiders, the players determine that none of them seem to have been hurt. However, Koomara collapses to the ground. Melucene and Vaino check the condition of Koomara, but can't determine what's ailing her; Melucene tells the other she seems to be paralysed. As the player Heroes debate what to do about Koomara's condition, they are momentarily distracted by the flight overhead of the gryphon as it circles above them. Uratan suggests that Melucene and Vaino check Koomara for bite marks - and the find two small fang-like marks on her left arm. Sahauviia says that some skull spiders have a venomous bite and that would seem to be confirmed by Koomara's incapacitation and paralysis. Uratan comments that the gryphon seems to be circling lower, but the others pay no attention to him as Melucene gives Koomara mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (as she seems to have stopped breathing for a few moments). The player Heroes debate what they can do for her, and Sahauviia tells Melucene that she needs to get something from her horse, and returns to where they left the horses.
Sahauviia returns carrying a small satchel, but fortunately the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation seems to work and Koomara starts breathing on her own again, coughing up some spittle. She is alive, but very weak, and still paralysed. Sahauviia tells Melucene and Vaino to open the scavenger's mouth and soothe her throat and pours the greenish fluid from the small vial she takes from the satchel down her throat. Koomara coughs and spits up some more fluid, and opens her eyes. Uratan asks Sahauviia what the greenish potion was, and the Atlantean tells her that it is Panacea, which she bought while they were in Cadaza at a friendly alchemist healer's shoppe. "Effective," the Asena scout says, regarding Koomara. "Indeed, it is," says Sahauviia, wrily. Melucene asks Koomara how she feels, and the scavenger tells her and the others that she is fine, but Melucene and and the others can tell that she is weak and shaky after her ordeal with the skull spiders' venom. Vaino asks Koomara if she is able to travel, as it is not wise for them to stay in these ruins. She nods that she is, but Vaino has to help her mount the horse she's sharing with Melucene as she is quite unsteady on her feet. Sahauviia tells the others that perhaps they should try and seek shelter somewhere for the rest of the day, perhaps one of the travel sheds. Melucene tells her they are in Galacea, not Tharshesh; they'll have to make do with what they can find where they are, but need to keep their eyes out for the Arac. She gives Sahauviia an odd look, that only Koomara catches but doesn't comment on. Vaino takes the lead, much to Uratan's annoyance, and the mounted Heroes move off in a northerly direction.
The player Heroes eventually emerge from the ruins back into a semblance of Galacean forest, and Melucene breathes a sigh of relief. She tells Sahauviia, who is riding close by, that she's worried about Koomara. She seems to be feverish, and is very shaky and somewhat dizzy. Sahauviia tells her it may be a side effect of the Panacea or perhaps the skull spider venom cleaning itself out of her system, and then moves up to where Vaino is and tells him and Uratan that they need to camp soon. When Vaino asks why, she gestures back at Melucene and Koomara, and says the Galacean is doing poorly. The player Heroes travel onward for a couple of more hours, the forest thinning out somewhat, and come upon what appears to be an old campsite. Looking around, Uratan sees there are signs of footprints on the ground in the area, but can't really make out what made them though he says that they are quite old, at least three weeks. Vaino decides not to stop there, and the player Heroes move off some three kilometres or so until Vaino finds a site that he likes well enough. The player Heroes stop, dismount, and set up camp. Meanwhile, Koomara spends a difficult night tossing and turning, but her fever eventually subsides and she falls into a restful sleep - much to Melucene's relief. Sahauviia keeps a watchful eye on them when her night watch time arrives. The evening passes rather uneventfully, the player Heroes keeping watch during the night, but their campsite is left well enough alone though at one point Uratan tells the others that there was a pack of wolves that watched them for a while.
About a week later, the player Heroes are travelling from the village of Alamanazor, and are some 1-1/2 days north of the community in the deep forest. The fully recovered Koomara tells the others that they have to be very careful and very quiet, as they are now in Arac territory properly. As the Heroes travel, Vaino and Uratan become concerned as they keep spotting prints of animals and other beasts, some of which they are able to identify but others that remain a complete mystery. The forest eventually gives way to a large area of scrub and sparse, but hardy, vegetation. Uratan warns the other Heroes that they are being watched, the Asena spotting two green eyes in the vegetation that seem to disappear. Koomara looks in the direction indicated, and it is only her fast reflexes and intuition that allow her to get out of the way as an arrow like a stiffened snake nearly grazes her shoulder. The player Heroes think that perhaps the Arac are among them.
The player Heroes draw their weapons, preparing to come under attack, but no attack is forthcoming. When Sahauviia wishes to see the arrow, a bewildered Koomara is unable to find it in any of the trees that are near her. Uratan tells the others that things in this area are not what they appear to be. Scanning the area where Koomara claims the arrow came from, Vaino spots what seem to be two animal prints; beckoning the Asena over, Uratan looks at them and says they are the prints of a puma. Looking up, Koomara sees a large puma with green eyes in the tree above her, but it takes no aggressive action. The other Heroes notice that there is a pride of nine cats in the trees surrounding them, and Sahauviia is convinced by both Melucene and Uratan to talk to the cats. Using her magic [and casting a Sensory spell with a DoD of -11], Sahauviia learns that humans attacked the pride, and that they are defending their young. She also learns that the cats have seen "those who act as spiders" in the area as well. The pumas agree to allow the characters to depart in peace to the northeast. Melucene and Uratan are somewhat horrified to see that Sahauviia's facial features have taken on feline qualities. "Sorcery," mutters Vaino under his breath, and refuses to go anywhere near the Atlantean sorceress. With the pride of pumas watching them closely, the player Heroes move off at a slow, relaxed pace.
As the player Heroes travel onward, the terrain gives way to more temperate land with meadows and copses of woods and shrubs scattered about. Uratan spots something in the distance, and looking in that direction Koomara says she thinks it's a humanoid hanging from an oak tree at the edge of a large copse. Uratan worries that it may be an Arac marker of territory, but then with a weary shrug of his shoulders and the others smiling at him, the Heroes head for the copse and the tree regardless, despite Koomara's misgivings. Arriving at the site some time later, the player Heroes see that the marker is actually a human effigy wearing a beaten up spider mask. The somewhat tired Koomara leans against a tree, while the other Heroes discuss what the group should do. Vaino spots an abandoned fire pit some 10 metres into the copse of trees, and goes to check it out after informing the others. He determines that the fire pit is old, at least a week or so, but has remains of ash and there is some old blood on the stones surrounding the pit. Melucene tells the others that she wants to go gather some wood for the fire pit, but the others veto this decision, saying that it's not safe. Vaino returns to where Koomara is leaning against the tree and they talk. She tells him there is no way to skirt around the Arac territory; they claim pretty much all of Galacea, allowing other tribes and communities to live there at their benevolence. Koomara wistfully tells him that she'd love to go and check out one of the ruins in the area that the Arac are said to protect, but at Vaino's look tells him that she learned her lesson at the previous ruins they went to investigate. Sahauviia and Melucene come over and join them, but Vaino tells them he will go and keep watch with Uratan.
Some fifteen minutes later, Melucene, Sahauviia and Koomara rejoin the others, and tell them that they believe they've figured out the safest, hopefully most defensible way of passing through the Arac territory. Koomara starts to lead the way, and when asked by Vaino where they are going, tells him that Sahauviia used her magic to locate the nearest set of ruins in the area. Vaino is rather alarmed at this, but Sahauviia asks him to trust her. "Have I ever led you astray?" she says, to which Vaino mutters, "Yes, several times." With a terrible sense of foreboding, Vaino and Uratan allow Koomara to lead them towards the northeast, the former following closely behind the Galacean scavenger, his axe in his hands. Some fifteen minutes later, the player Heroes arrive near what appear to be a set of cairns. They spot a very large, 15 cms long, 12-legged mottled blue spider [a corpse spider] that emerges from one of the cairns. Deciding to avoid the creature, the Heroes stealthily move off [though only Koomara succeeds fully at the Stealth attempt, the others alerting the Arac nearby] - and come upon a set of ruins proper, the low grasses containing what appear to be meandering serpentine trails that Koomara carefully avoids. Stopping for a moment, the player Heroes decide to skirt the ruins, Koomara and Uratan leading the way.
The player Heroes are taken completely by surprise by the Arac, who ambush them as they emerge from the ruins with a blood-curdling cry. Sahauviia, Melucene, Vaino, and Uratan are caught in the sticky, very strong nets of spider webbing thrown by the Arac, with only Koomara avoiding them due to her agility. Sahauviia and Melucene tell Koomara not to flee into the ruined area, but instead to talk to the Arac. Vaino and Uratan struggle somewhat against the webbing that holds them, their Arac attackers holding firm [but take 2 damage points each from the strong webbing]. [Both players knew that being captured by the Arac was part of the female Heroes' plan all along.]
Koomara talks with the Arac in the Alban tongue, who ask the Hero questions and assess the other player characters. Her attempts fall somewhat short, as they know who and what Koomara is, and Melucene changes things up by addressing them in Tharshi. She tells them that they are trying to merely pass through the Arac territory and mean them and the ruins they are pledged to protect no harm. [She succeeds with a Critical Success on her Influence roll, and gains 2 Renown points.] The leader of the Arac declares that he believes her words and will let her and her friends go if they offer a gift to their god, Anansi (the Trickster). [All this time, the spider webbing nets tighten on the Heroes caught in them, inflicting 2 points of damage.] Sahauviia tells Koomara that she has two more Panacea potions in her belongings, and when the latter conveys this to the Arac, they accept this "treasure" as the offering, and release Sahauviia and the other player characters from the spider web bindings. As the Arac allow the player Heroes to depart the area, their leader warns them that other Arac tribes may not be obliging and giving them safe passage. He also tells the player Heroes there is a human village, Byrkas, some two days to the northwest. Furthermore, the Heroes are warned that if they reveal the truths they've learned of the Arac to others, "Anansi will play a final trick" upon them. Speaking for the player Heroes, Koomara says that she and the others will abide by this stricture. Bidding them farewell, the Arac disappear back into the ruins. The player Heroes make sure they are all right, and once they determine that they're in good shape, start to make their way northwest, with both Koomara and Uratan leading the way.
Friday night's game session of the
Atlantis: The Second Age RPG campaign was a pretty good one. There wasn't any real tension between the player characters, other than their being worried about Koomara after the skull spider bite, but that was fine given the external threat(s) the player Heroes faced during the session. The players told me afterwards that they quite enjoyed some of the events of the game session, and did not expect the Arac to show up when they did; that's why the three female Heroes came up with the plan they did. They enjoyed the game session quite a lot, commenting that their travels through Galacea have been "quite interesting".
Overall, this was a very good session of the
Atlantis: The Second Age RPG, and I'm rather looking forward to the next session of the game in a couple of weeks.
