Sunday Afternoon Game - Star Trek Adventures, Session 1

Sep 10, 2018 13:11

Well, yesterday afternoon spross started running his game of the Star Trek Adventures RPG with Tammy and myself as players. You can read a bit more about my character for the game, Marcus Claudius Antoninus, by following this link to that brief post about him.

Tammy's character, Dr. Genevieve Deschamps, and I started aboard a runabout heading towards Starbase 364 (Narendra Station) on the edge of the Shackleton Expanse for our new assignment aboard the U.S.S. Stargazer. Others aboard the shuttle were Lt. David Carson (engineering) and Lt. Henry Brightfeather (security); the former was also assigned to the Stargazer but the latter was heading for the U.S.S. Thunderbird. After answering a distress signal from the Xerxes IV station, we found ourselves in a royal mess and facing some tough choices, as well as needing some replacement parts to get the roundabout back into space.

I won't go into more detail about the plot, since I don't want to spoil things here for potential players, but will say that things went as well as could be expected in a Star Trek episode, and things should get interesting next episode. The adventure isn't really suited in a lot of ways to my character, but Tammy's doctor and botanist is having a field day (pun intended) of it.

From the point of view of the game mechanics, SteveR hasn't really done a good job of getting them across to Tammy and me, notably some of the "tricks of the trade" and the like, and I'm finding the Momentum pool rather limiting. Either that, or she and I are just not rolling all that well, though SteveR keeps forgetting to hand out Momentum. (He doesn't tell us the Difficulty at times, so I don't really know whether we're succeeding enough to get Momentum, either.) So far, the rules have seemed a bit too specific at times and overly vague at others.

That said, I'm enjoying the game to this point, but that's because I like playing!
