RPG Change in the Air Tonight

Nov 21, 2014 17:50

As mentioned in this morning's post, there are gaming changes afoot coming for me and the three (eek! I've got three groups! eek!) groups of players that I have.

As folks may have noticed, I've been running the Abney Park's Airship Pirates RPG for the last little while. This is the second (or perhaps third?) go round with the game for me, and I ( Read more... )

Yeah, I like a lot of Abbney Park music, and the name song. And we were possibly among the first 50 to have the book. But after seeing the game, it's just too...too for us to be enthusiastic...or interested, in playing a game with it.

Actually, the music of the band is quite good, but the roleplaying game has its issues. 'Nuff said. :)

Given that I'm not myself at the moment, I don't think I got the reference. :(

I'm really sorry you couldn't really get into the game. I admit, AP:AP has some really bleak concepts behind it, and the setting itself has a feel to it that can get very uncomfortable for people. I'm surprised you didn't like the mechanics though - what about it didn't you like? I've run the game and found the mechanics very good for cinematic roleplaying.

Not a matter of not being able to get into the game. I've run over 30 sessions of AP's AP, so it's not like I don't have the experience with the game and its system. It's more a case that it's not the style of the genre that I want to run, and I find that it's got too many mashed up concepts; like I said in the blog, I'm something of a purist when it comes to rpgs and genres that I like. :)

As for the game mechanics, well...there's a basic-ness there that works fine, since it is a simplified version of the Victoriana game mechanics, but I've found that there's too many little things about the combat system that don't allow it to work all that well at times.

Anyway, 'nuff said. :)

All three of your groups are switching from Airship Pirates to a|state in the same week? That's kind of impressive. Was it a shared sentiment across each group?

With the Friday gaming group and the Wednesday night group definitely, as while they liked some elements of Airship Pirates they weren't thrilled with the game system itself. One of the Wednesday players commented that it's not the game that it seems to be at first glance. The Sunday players never really wanted to play the game, but did so because I wanted to run it again, so for them, they're happy to get away from it.
