Friday Night Game Report - Airship Pirates Session 16

Oct 28, 2014 16:35

As I mentioned on the weekend, I gamed with the Friday night gaming group this past week (October 24th), and once more rather enjoyed the game. The Friday night players continued on with their campaign of the Abney Park's Airship Pirates post-apocalyptic steampunk rpg. You can read about the previous game session in this journal entry. Since this post is quite long, I've put it behind a cut for those who don't want to read about the roleplaying game campaigns that I'm running.

June 25th, 2150 AD

At the Double Sail, Lady Emily Harrington-Boothe, Haley Deuce, Arthur Quentin-Smythe, Richard Wilson Sequoia, and Calliandra Shade descend to the common room, and indulge the local brew, keeping their ears out and listening in to various conversations. Calli has a bit too much to drink, much to Lady Emily's annoyance, and she is forced to help the girl back up to their rooms. Haley and Arthur learn from some of the others in the common room that the political situation on the Skyloft has changed, and that the situation for foreign traders in Shadowvale is now not favourable. The Shadow Guard, the new police force under the new regime of Hannigan "Black Han" Mulvaney, have been harsh about dealings with traders, and have been "questioning" and beating any merchants or vendors that catch their fancy. Arthur tells Haley that he's worried about Avaram.

Avaram Brightstar makes his way to the merchant's quarter of Shadowvale, to find that there are Shadow Guards all over the place. Using stealth and his wits, Avaram makes his way to the home of Hrovath Downey. Downey is alarmed to see his trading contact, but asks if he's there to make a deal for the merchandise that they discussed at their last meeting. Avaram says he is indeed, and even has the means to transport the goods out of Shadowvale - he's hooked up with a pretty smart trader from Sanctum Skyloft. The two agree to meet the next night at a warehouse on the airside docks, where Avaram can inspect the merchandise, and potentially make the deal. Avaram leaves, and cautiously makes his way back to the Double Sail inn and tavern.

Lady Emily descends after getting Calli settled, and she is quite disturbed to learn what Haley and Arthur have heard about the status of traders in Shadowvale. Lady Emily is determined to go after Avaram, but Arthur reminds her that they don't know where in the Skyloft he's gone to find his contact. They needn't worry, as Avaram returns and informs the characters that he's met with his contact, Downey, and that the merchandise is theirs after they inspect it the next night. The player characters decide there's nothing else to be learned for the rest of the night, and head for their rooms and some sleep.

As the player characters sleep, they come under attack by forces hostile to them, a group of robbers. Lady Emily's wits and knife skill save her from kidnapping and embarrassment, and she dispatches her attacker. She immediately goes in search of Calli, fearing the worst. Several gunshots are fired by Haley Deuce as she, too, dispatches her attacker more violently than Emily was forced to do. Arthur is awakened as a cutthroat is about to do just that, and he dodges out of the way, snatching up his sword, and dispatches his attacker in several rounds. Richard Sequoia's combat skills and senses serve him in good stead, and he is able to dispatch his foe relatively quickly, being surprised at the fact that it is a woman. Calliandra is barely able to avoid her attacker, using her agility to keep avoiding him, but she takes several wounds. She is spared by the arrival of Lady Emily, who dispatches the robber in short order, and then Emily treats the youngster's wounds the best they can.

As the Shadow Guards arrive at the inn and tavern to investigate the brouhaha, the player characters re-group together, and discuss matters. Gimpy Steve arrives on the scene to determine what has happened, though he fades into the woodwork of the inn as the Shadow Guard take Lady Emily, Haley, Arthur, Richard, and Calli in for questioning, at one of the infamous Black Barracks. Finding no evidence of wrong-doing on the part of the player characters, the Shadow Guard release them, telling them they're free to go, and the player characters determine to head back to the Double Sail, pay their bill, and depart their rooms for greener, safer pastures.

They are able to leave the Double Sail, much to Gimpy Steve's regret (right!!), and Avaram leads them to another inn he knows with a "good" reputation, the Sark and Pfeffer. The player characters settle into their new quarters, after waking the innkeeper, Sirius Thoms-Gracewind, and the player characters sleep late that morning. Once they've all awakened and broken their fast, Lady Emily and the others talk about the events of the night before, and realise that someone was out to either kill them, discredit them, or both. Calli's injuries need a proper medic, so Avaram takes her to see a friend of his, Plimpsole Johnson, a doctor friend of his in the Skyloft, Lady Emily accompanying her and the trader, and she receives medical treatment for her wounds. The rest of the player characters go out and about and do a bit of research, though nothing comes of it.

That evening, the player characters and Avaram make their way to the airside docks, and the warehouse belonging to Hrovath Downey. Downey greets them all friendly like, and he and Avaram lead the way through the warehouse to where Downey states the merchandise is located. They come to a section of the warehouse full of crates, casks, and other types of shipping containers. Downey shows Avaram and Haley the goods - a large shipment of wine, cloth bales, and several large crates of clothes and fashions that will fetch a good price on Sanctum - and the two are about to come to an agreement. It is Arthur and Richard who have the sharpness of senses to hear the sound of the ambush that lies in wait! Avaram berates Downey for betraying him this way, but Downey says he had no choice. Avaram's attention is diverted as a group of Skyfolk thugs armed with cutlass, dagger, and steampistol attack the player characters. The battle is joined!

And so the Friday night game session of Abney Park's Airship Pirates came to an end with the player characters in a tight spot. I thought they were going to throw their dice at me, the frustration on their faces as they realised where we were stopping the game session for the night! hehe The game session was a pretty good one, I thought, having some good player interactions, some interesting stuff that they observed and did in Shadowvale, and they had the fight in the night with the robbers. The session had a little bit of everything in it, something I was pleased about.

The players told me that they had a good time with the session, and Kathy and Ellie admitted that they thought they might be in real trouble during the fight with the robbers at the Double Sail. I told them that of course they weren't, but it was still a close thing, given the injuries sustained by Ellie's Calliandra. Both David and Mark were pleased about the physicality they got to engage in during the course of the adventure, and Angela said that she'd enjoyed her sequences with "wheedling" information out of some of the patrons of the Double Sail.

Overall, an enjoyable game session of Abney Park's Airship Pirates, and I'm looking forward to the in media res situation that will arise at the next game session's start! :)
