Computer Dead, Nervous Breakdown Ahead

My laptop has died with all data lost. system beeps four times, then message appears that there's no hard drive.

In the middle of all the other crap I'm dealing with today... and I feel like everything is out of control.  ::nervous breakdown::

Just kept trying to reboot it and it worked once. As I had a spare hard disk in the computer I copied all the essential things to that. I'd already installed Windows 7 on the spare and flipped between booting to the spare and the original disk. I got lucky in that it worked briefly giving me the time to copy before it fell over again. Then I bought a new spare and copied all my data to that.

A month later I bought a two disk NAS box as I have a lot of roleplaying PDFs that I don't want to lose now.

Something I just now thought of (rather than last nite, when we were talking) that could have caused the problem is that the hard drive controller on the motherboard may have been what died - and not the hard drive itself.

I'm glad you're getting the issue diagnosed. If you have to spend money to get it fixed, best to fix what's actually broken. I still have my fingers crossed that you're able to recover your data.
