Well, it may have been a dirty trick, but it brought some older memories up for me--specifically the Monty Python/Douglas Adams link, and around the same time, discovering Pierce Brosnan on Remington Steele. All of those had a huge impact on me, and while I don't think it started there, each one pushed it along. Especially the latter two--DA's exquisite turns of phrase, and Pierce's absolute deliciousness. (Not sure when the Edward Mulhare-accent-learning thing fits into the timeline, but I'm guessing it's all around roughly the same time.)
Oh! And I'm with you on High Fidelity. I want to see the UK version, too. Why do they keep doing this with his stuff? Did you see there's a new version of Fever Pitch coming out with Drew Barrymore, Jimmy Fallon, and the Red Sox? Augh!
