I actually think that the difference in communication comes from men being in social power positions for so long and women being in positions of non-power positions. Women communicate in ways indicative of lower power positions, meaning they hint and do not (typically) directly request what they want. This is not a judgment, just an observation that this is how low-power people tend to communicate. (It happens to both genders in other cultures where one ethnic group, say, is oppressed.) Men also "hear" criticism about particular things (just as women do) even when it is not implied because they have been conditioned to feel judged / judge themselves for certain things.
I am so in favor of clear, open, honest, direct, compassionate communication -- it just leads to so much less suffering, for *both* genders.
AGREED! This is definitely an article about typical gender differences in the main population of THIS country. But you know. ;)
I wish people would say what they think more often. In our marriage it's him who is often intmidated by me and takes HOURS to come around and tell me what's bothering him when I KNOW there's something. Grrr. Frustrating.
I am working on being open to whatever he has to say and discussing rationally even if I am upset and this is helping him to tell me things more readily. But I personally think he's been so squashed by his parents that he will always have a hard time.
