Tangentially related story: when I worked for The Man, our office was very very segregated by sex. Every lower-paid and lower-ranked job was held by a woman. Every higher-paid and higher-ranked job was held by a man. I was in the middle ground, one of a few women among many men with enough power to hand work off to a secretary but not enough to call a meeting.
I noticed that the conversations around the coffeemaker were also sex-differentiated. The women talked about drama shows on TV and local news. The men talked about sports.
When I got my housemate to brief me on the sports news before work each morning, I got a 20% raise. My conclusion: sports knowledge is social (and sometimes monetary) power in our society.
