I only saw a scattered few eps of the show when it was on--I'm thinking I need to dive in and mainline the mytharc. y/y?

Y/Y!!! OMG, that's how I really started watching the show, when I'd only seen a few episodes of season 5, then the movie. FX was re-running all of the mytharc episodes in order and it was an awesome way to experience the show.
