There is an odd moment of Charles/Jean not-so-subtle subtext in New X-Men: E is for Extinction and it's freaking me out. I can't stop thinking about it, because it's just so - odd ( Read more... )

Back in the Horrible 90s with the Horrible Onslaught Crossover, an X-Men writer (was it Mark Waid?) confirmed that Xavier used to be in love with Jean, once upon a time.

Very, very ewwww. I'm firmly in the camp that Jean is like a daughter to Charles, and no matter how much he loves her, she's his Daughter and Friend, not his, um, sultry, cool-washcloth-to-the-forehead vixen.

I remember the panel you're talking about, and I'm prepared to lay the blame entirely at Frank Quitely's door. While a dazzling artist in many respects, Quitely's all about the pouty, lumpy-lipped womens.

Yes, I do like Quitely's work on this series, but I wonder if Jean might seem less like she's rescuing her lover from Cerebra's grip if she wasn't so pouty.

Though she still is clutching him rather tightly. *shudders*

Very freaky. I kept waiting for it to be an illusion - or an Evil Jean Sabotaging Cerebra or.....well, anything other than what it was.

She's like a daughter to him! A daughter! Not a.....whoever that is sitting on his bed.
