Hmm, how about: who is your favorite character to write? :)

That's a hard one, because there are so many I like writing. Seven, Ace, Four, Romana(s), the Brig occasionally. I like writing Ace, especially her sort of silent interior monologues which I always seem to give her in things from her p.o.v. and you get to use all the bizarre 80s slang they gave her. Delgado!Master is good too - I should write more of him - something about the way he really seems to enjoy his own suave villainy appeals to me.

What drew you to Ace and Seven - and do you plan to write more epic adventures for them for me to pimp like mad?

:D

Well, they're "my" Doctor and companion from when I was watching the series in the late 80s, and then obviously came the New Adventures and so on, so these were my formative experiences as a Who fan, I guess. So, really, they were the obvious choice for me, but I do enjoy writing them a) because of who they are and b) their unique style of banter/conversation which I can sort of slip into quite easily and keep going to the point where the word count inflates and they end up not doing much more than talking. Whether that's a good thing or not, I leave up to you. ;) And I always have plans for Seven and Ace. Always.

I must say, I will consider it a 'good thing' as everything I've ever read that you have written is gorgeous in every way possible. I definitely look forward to more Ace and Seven being penned by you in the future.

And ohmygods I want that icon!! It is Relevant in All Ways!! *wibbles!*

Aw, well you're too kind. :) I will endeavour to get back to them if I ever get off the UNIT kick.

It's a great icon, isn't it? lost_spook made it for me a few years ago now, and it definitely shows that she has my number. ;)

What are your upcoming projects at the moment? Even if they're really just excitable bunnies that may never be allowed out to play. ;-)

Fic-wise...yeah, there are a few things sort of in their early stages or on the horizon. First of all, there's the current Brig fic, which has grown into a monster compared to my initial idea of it as a one-off in the form of a series of brief scenes. Then, there's the Captain Jack, Swinging 60s Secret Agent fic (with flashbacks to WW2) which I started writing back when I was deep into the retro Torchwood stuff and which has received a new lease of life because now it kind of ties into my obsession with early UNIT and UNIT dating. Then, there's the unseen UNIT/Two/Season 6b story taking place between Invasion and Spearhead. Oh, and possibly a couple of short linking fics between these three, featuring Isobel Watkins and/or Tobias Vaughn (either could be suitable for your minor characters ficathon, come to think of it), and WOTAN and Cybermen and Uncle Tom Cobley and all ( ... )

Aw, it all sounds cool - you do always write a great Brig, and UNIT generally. :-)

Colour me shocked, I tell you, SHOCKED. ;-p

And yay for the UNIT dating giving you some ideas, if still not yet about who went out with who at the Valentine's Ball that was crashed by invading aliens.

I blame that Air Commodore Gilmore - he doesn't half go on...

:D

The UNIT Valentine's Ball - now, there's a concept.

Ever felt like crying "Never again!" after writing a fic?

Reply

jjpor February 9 2015, 20:22:44 UTC
Yes, a few times! :D Some of the long ones I've found myself drawn into stop being labours of love at some point and I'd be lying if I said I forced myself to finish all of them. And you don't like to say you like getting feedback, but sometimes you write something and nobody seems to notice (although I'm bad for not leaving more comments/reviews myself on things, so I can hardly talk). And then you get the lingering feeling of guilt you should be writing something of your own or otherwise being more productive in life generally. Same sorts of things as everybody else who writes fic, I don't doubt.

I agree - it's good to know it's a widespread experience. :)

I'll give you the same question I gave liadtbunny: Do you find writing for a character changes the way you think of them?

I think it has in some cases, definitely, because one of the things about fanfiction is that a large part of it is attempting to capture the characters as portrayed in the original media so that they pass muster with other fans. And I think if you're trying to do that at anything more than the most basic level, you find yourself paying even more attention and analysing things even more, consciously or not, next time you see that character on screen. An example that's on my mind at the moment - I don't think I quite realised before just what a ticking timebomb of probable PTSD and other issues the Brigadier is before I really rewatched the first few UNIT stories including Web. It casts his almost preternatural calm to the point of absurdity in some of the later Three stories and the talk of his "breakdown" in Mawdryn Undead (not to mention his mysterious absence "in Geneva" in the last couple of Four UNIT stories - they have clinics and things in Geneva, I'm given to understand, as well as UNIT HQ) in a disturbing new light.
