Astonished and saddened this afternoon to read that one of my pop-cultural touchstones Rik Mayall - Lord Flashheart, amongst many other things - has passed away today. No word as to cause yet, but 56 is too young in any case. My thoughts go out to his family

His name is still trending worldwide on Twitter as of right now, which really says something about how beloved he was. I mostly knew him from The Young Ones, but having caught one of his Lord Flashheart scenes on YouTube today, I'm clearly going to have to catch up with Blackadder. (I've seen bits of it, but not even close to the whole thing.)

I know, that was a bit of a shock - and I remember that Jackanory, too. (I remember all the Roald Dahl's for some reason, definitely including that one.)

Probably what I'd seen him in most recently was his two Jonathan Creeks. He was great fun in the first Christmas special. And, yeah, 56? :-/
