I wouldn't use "electrical engineering" as the example of the low-status, no-future field to track poor kids into, since what most people call "electrical engineering" actually requires a lot of academics, earns very good money, and offers advancement opportunities. Perhaps you mean "household electrician"? Or "household plumber"?
