His hand tightened around hers again. “We can get through this. When this is over, we can leave town, just you and me. We'll make a new life for ourselves.”
A life without Damon. Elena's chest constricted at the thought; did she want that? She bit her lip. “I'm not sure if I can leave Damon behind,” she said, in a voice so small, that a human would have had difficulty hearing it. Stefan's ears weren't human, however. ....
He smiled gently. “Then we're agreed?” he asked.
She nodded silently. I mean, my heart! And then I worried you weren't going to fit in any kind of resolution with Damon before the end of this chapter and I was all flaily until I finished reading ( ... )

[Grins] My work here is done!
In my mind, Elena is very conflicted at the moment. She barely knows who she is, never mind who she wants. Stefan's problem, in this story, is that while intellectually he may grasp that Elena is a Vampire now, he still hasn't accepted it emotionally. Elena isn't stupid; she realises this, and feels rejected. (The whole not-eating-in-front-of-Stefan thing is a symptom of this).
Damon, on the other hand, doesn't have the same expectations. His matter of factness about her condition is a huge draw for her. On top of that, while she still loves Stefan, she's also beginning to come to the realisation that Damon is more than a friend that she just happens to be attracted to.

..that Damon is more than a friend that she just happens to be attracted to.
Well yes. She also has hot hot sex with him! This is a very important criteria when ranking level of friendship. Well that and the fact she knows he cares for her, and doesn't judge, and she can talk to him and he'll listen, and all that crap too. ;)
I love it all.

Thank you for posting this today!! It made me feel much better after a long afternoon of job hunting. Bleh. I'm really looking forward to more!

ROFL! If she left, then I'd have no more story!
And I'm sorry to hear you've had such a horrid day. I remember the joys of job hunting - never fun :-(

I think Stefan forgets that he's always the first one to leave, and that Damon always finds him anyway. Why would leaving with Elena change that pattern?
I find it very plausible that Stefan would take this path. I imagine from his perspective, the longer you wait before making the switch the harder it would be. It makes me wonder how Damon knows differently - perhaps there was someone in his past who chased the same rainbow as Stefan only from the beginning, with terrible consequences.
Your story is making me think, so good job! It's also very well written, so GREAT job on that!

Personally, I think Stefan suffers from selective memory loss when it comes to his brother. Each time, he thinks, "This is it, no more shall I see him!"
Um. No.
I think Damon has a very different POV when it comes to drinking human blood, and the whole Vicki incident pretty much drove home the fact that animal blood doesn't do enough to curb the cravings of a newly turned vampire, who is pretty much constantly hungry to begin with!
Also, I'm remembering how Lexi, a Vampire with 300+ experience, could only hack the animal blood diet for two weeks before she packed it in, and Damon's belief that you need to learn how to control you cravings for human blood, rather than deny it... because that way lies the binge killing spree...
