Summary: It had been five years, but he never forgot a face…or a song...
Showstopper
Lorne’s recognised her immediately. Her hair, still closely cropped, now shone a startling, platinum blonde, but her dark eyes still glittered with wicked humour. It had been five years, but he never forgot a face…or a song.
Idly, Lorne wondered if she knew she was in a demon bar, or whether she merely assumed that there was a very eccentric dress code. It had happened before.
He watched with amusement as one of the waiters shyly approached her. She tended to have a certain effect on men. Actually, she tended to have that effect on everyone. She exuded a very special kind of charisma, the kind that trumpeted danger even as it drew you close. She also wasn’t above using it to her advantage, on occasion.
Yes, that song had been very informative. Luckily for him, she wasn’t here looking for a mark. She was here to sing …and, boy, could this lady sing.
The H’Yakein on the stage finished his rendition of ‘The Final Countdown’ and Lorne smiled in relief, it wasn’t that the demon had a bad singing voice, but he did have some extremely dark thoughts…and besides, it was a terrible song.
Slowly, she rose from her chair and ambled onto the stage, and Lorne braced himself.
Unforgettable, that's what you are
Unforgettable, though near or far
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me…
The images flooded through his mind, flashes of memory that should be impossible for a human to have. Long centuries haunted her voice, and one face dominated it all, the face of beautiful redhead, with kind eyes and an impetuous laugh. Five years had gone by, and she was still grieving.
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too
For a moment, the club was silent, and Lorne got to his feet and clapped, breaking the spell; a split second later, the club was on its feet. Yeah, the lady was a real showstopper.
He watched as she quickly made her way back to her table, and he hurried to intercept her. This time she wasn’t going to get away. “Hiya toots, just wanted to tell you that was really beautiful.”
She smiled, her cheeks dimpling. “Thank you, you’re not so bad yourself. I watched you perform.”
“Oh, that? That was nothing, just trying to warm up the crowd,” he said, shrugging the compliment away. “I’m Lorne, by the way.”
“I’m Amanda.” She answered, putting on her coat. “Well, I hate to introduce myself and run, but I’m afraid I have a prior engagement.”
Disappointed, Lorne reluctantly stood out of her way. “Come back anytime, honey.”
“I’ll do that,” she said, laughing. “Good bye, Lorne. It was nice meeting you.”
“You too, Amanda, you too.” Lorne watched her as she climbed the stairs, wondering if he’d ever see her again.
Wondering if he’d ever find out who, exactly, was Rebecca.
