Moments of Doubt
.
Nyota felt his weight lift from the bed and reluctantly opened her eyes, weariness still trying to lull her back to sleep. She watched as Spock sat on the floor in one fluid move, and noted the familiar set of his shoulders and the straightness of his spine. He was meditating.

It must have been another nightmare.

It isn’t as if Nyota didn’t have doubts. Even before Vulcan was destroyed, she knew she hadn’t picked an easy and unentangled relationship, and she suspected it wouldn’t get any easier with the coming years. High maintenance, was how her sister had described him, and she had a point.

Spock spoke of his Mother often. He spoke of evening meals, and working with her in her rose garden; entire conversations described in loving detail. He seemed determined to share every moment he remembered with her, and Nyota understood his regret that they'd never met. It was very human, after all.

It took her a while to realise Spock didn’t know his Mother as well as he might have; little jokes and asides, moments of tension that he remembered but didn’t understand. Nyota resolved not to reveal the entire picture. Something told her that Amanda Grayson would not have thanked her for it.

“Nyota, are you well?” He had moved silently to the side of the bed, and he reached down as she caught his eyes. His hand was hot on her cheek, and his face solemn, and she knew, with crystal clarity, that she would always have doubts about their future.

But she will not doubt him.

And that was the best that anybody could hope for, she supposed.
