Recently I've begun to listen to all the Seven/Ace/Hex audios, usually last thing at night in the warmth of my own bed. In hindsight, that may have been a slight error of judgement on my part, especially with this audio :-P
I guess the title should have been a giveaway or, failing that, the CD cover:
I mean, look at that rabbit! No good could come of that rabbit!
Point of interest; do you have any idea how difficult it is to run and hide under your covers when you're already under the them? Bloody difficult, that's what it is. But I managed...right up until the moment I realised I was lying in the dark, listening to an audio in which all the scary bad stuff happens when - you guessed it - all the lights go out.
By the way, in case you were still wondering in which direction this review was going, I adored this episode! An old isolated house in the middle of nowhere, strange happenings that go bump in the night....Ace in a nightgown. What's not to love? Add to that, the not so small fact that the scary bits actually made me squeeze my eyes shut at one point (I am so happy I didn't have an audience for this!) and you've got a perfect scary tale!
The dialogue and banter between the Doctor, and Ace and 'Hexy' is also rather amusing and fun, and I began to feel that the characters have a real rapport and were very fond of each of other. (I am now beginning to understand the Ace/Hex thing - I was half expecting him to pull her metaphorical pigtails at one point.)
My verdict: If Chimes of Midnight is the perfect Big Finish Christmas audio, then this should be put forward as the ideal audio for Halloween. A few genuinely scary moments, and some very good character development.
