Summary: One beautiful day, love came to Sunggyu like a flash of lighting - bright and unexpected. A love that attacked him out of the blue and left him baffled. A love that changed as the seasons changed...
---
Sunggyu smiled as he watched the light filtered through the orange and red canopy above. The leaves danced around him, carried on the backs of gentle breezes. Musky scents lingered in the air, the smell of decomposed leaves and mud pooled together from the rain the night before. He swung his arms, smiled until his eyes disappeared from view, and puffed out his cheeks as he enjoyed the perfect Fall day. Everything was perfect. Perfect. Perfect. Per -
His body stiffened as the damp earth seeped into his pants and shirt. His breath hitched as something - or someone - heavy pressed down on top of him. Sunggyu blinked against the blinding light, brought up an arm to shield his eyes and stared groggily around him. He was on his back, he realized, still being pressed down by the person atop of him.
“What the hell?” He managed, willing his breathing to get back to normal. “WHAT THE HELL!?”
He half expected for the person (it was definitely a person) to jump up and apologize profusely for tackling him to the ground, but whoever it was (since he couldn’t manage to move anything aside from his head - therefore, he couldn’t see even if he tried lifting his head as high as he could), just kept clinging onto him - snuggling into his chest and slowly…
“YAH! Are you snoring!?” Sunggyu asked furiously, struggling beneath his captor, “You better not be asleep!”
“I’m sorry.”
Sunggyu glared at the boy in front of him, “For what? Tackling me down to the ground or falling asleep on top of me?”
“Both?” The boy replied, looking sheepish and not at all apologetic. “I haven’t had much sleep.”
“And you couldn’t just fall into a…” Sunggyu waved his hands around, “I don’t know, a bed or something?”
“I’m Woohyun,” came the reply, completely ignoring what he just said. “And you are?”
“A mess thanks to you.”
“Okay, I’ll just call you “hamster” since you won’t tell me,” Woohyun looped their arms together, “Let me buy you lunch.”
“I…let go of me!”
“Come along, Hamster,” Woohyun insisted, dragging along his reluctant pet. “Listen to your master.”
And so it went for the rest of the week. No matter where Sunggyu tried to walk, he always found himself flat on his back. At least Woohyun stopped falling asleep on him.
“You need to stop,” Sunggyu said one day as they were lying on the grass under a big oak tree, shaded from the harsh sunlight by the branches, “I think I’m getting a concussion.”
“You like it,” Woohyun poked his chubby cheeks, then snuggled closer into his arms, which were wrapped completely around the younger boy (this was established on the third day when Sunggyu decided he was sick of being called “hamster”; so they went about introducing themselves formally).
“Oh yeah, I love it when my head hits cement.”
“I already said I was sorry. Only soft grounds from now on, I promise.”
Sunggyu said nothing as he watched the sway of the leaves, dancing slowly to their own melody. The cold was starting to seep into his clothes but he couldn’t bring himself to move. He only pulled Woohyun closer to him, thankful for the warmth from the close contact. The trees no longer held a vibrant orangey glow; instead it was turning a dull brown color. It was amazing how fast things can change in a week.
It was the same between them. They met like flash of light, unexpected and vibrant. It was dulling into a comfortable glimmer, not as vivacious but still comfortable. They didn’t really establish a friendship, not really…just something like a mutual companionship. It turned out that they were both far away from home, and they were both Performing Arts majors.
The bond went deeper than that, though. They were both perfectionists, striven for that glory end; but whereas Sunggyu knew and understood that he should also enjoy the path, not just the goal; Woohyun slaved himself to perfect everything whether it be dance or vocal. Sunggyu performed for himself, for the love of music; Woohyun performed for the love and approval of others.
Differences and perfectionist tendencies aside, they didn’t compete against each other. Instead, there was a nice balance when they were together, two strong personalities - two bright lights blending together instead of clashing.
It was more serious now. Woohyun was no longer the boy who would tackle him sporadically throughout the day, no longer the boy whom he shared stresses and worries of the day, no longer the boy whom he comforted and gave advice occasionally as they lay together beneath the oak tree, cuddled underneath layers and layers of blankets.
Winter was coming. The last of the fall leaves lay on the ground, rotten; there was a frost that covered the grass in the morning as Sunggyu trudged to classes, his eyes barely opened.
The problem came slowly. One night of restlessness became two…then seven. He could no longer fall asleep on his cold bed. He looked forward to one of their naps under the tree, looked forward to snuggling up to the radiance heat that was Nam Woohyun. That was the only time when he could sleep. But it was impossible now given their increased workload and the cold was becoming bone chilling, they could no longer sleep outdoors.
He voiced this worry one day as Woohyun practiced vocals and he watched, fiddling with the piano.
“Hm?” Woohyun stopped in the middle of scales practice to look at him, “Did you say something?”
“N…nothing,” He would be damned if he repeated it.
“What is it Hamster Gyu? Tell your master what’s wrong.”
“You’re not my master!”
“Of course I am! I chose you, and then I caught you!” Woohyun grinned obnoxiously.
“I am not a Pokémon!” Sunggyu retorted indignantly.
Woohyun stopped for a second to study him, then doubled over in laughter. “You…your cheeks does look like Pikachu! How come I never noticed?”
The rest of vocal practice consisted of Woohyun chasing him around the room screaming, “Kim Sunggyu, I choose you!” as Sunggyu tried his best to dodge the various things being thrown at him.
“I think these naps are messing with my sleeping pattern,” Woohyun said one day when they were in Sunggyu’s room in between classes. “Is there a reason why we always nap in the afternoon?”
“You started it.”
“That was when I had night practices and couldn’t get any sleep. I don’t have those practices anymore and I still can’t get any sleep,” Woohyun sighed.
Sunggyu didn’t want to admit that he hadn’t gotten much sleep at night, either, so he shrugged.
“I think we should move the nap time to later at night.” This was said nonchalantly but Sunggyu didn’t miss the shade of red that flushed Woohyun’s cheeks. He hadn’t dared to hope, but…
“Are you…” Sunggyu took a deep breath, better now than never, “Do you want to move in?”
Woohyun sat up abruptly, “Are you asking?”
“If…if you want.”
“W…can we…share the bed?”
“Aren’t we now?”
“…Y-yes.”
Sunggyu smiled, “Good. I couldn’t sleep without you.”
Woohyun chuckled, “I think that’s why I couldn’t sleep, either.”
