Choosing wives...?

Yeah. It's custom in Xing - the Emperor chooses one wife from each of the clans, and he has a child with each of those wives. And then when the Emperor dies, the oldest surviving child of the Emperor - or the one with the Emperor's favor - becomes the new Emperor, and the cycle repeats itself. It may not be the greatest system, but it keeps the clans united.
