'Cause A Bearcatcher Is A Person In Your Neigborhood...In your neighborhood.

Now I like a good crazy local news story as much as the next person, so I was more than amused when tales surfaced last week of a bear sighting over on the other side of town. In some dude's back yard. Up in a tree. On the side of the road. But still, Other Side of Town. Imagine my horror when I noticed an alert at the top of the newspaper's ( Read more... )

LOL! I mean, not to laugh at your pain, but ...LOL! There are thankfully zero dangerous bears left in Illinois (I'll include the football team in that statistic *rimshot*), with all those left being the kind that live in zoos. A few years back (which, to me, means the early '90s) there was a bear wandering around in Door County, WI, where my parents have a log cabin and we vacationed frequently. I remember it being a big deal to the locals, but as a too-cool-for-the-room teenager, I was mostly "pfft" about it ( ... )

Silly me. And to think that the worst things I thought I had to worry about encountering in the neighborhood this summer were bees, mosquitos, extreme temperatures kids on vacation. Bears definitely did not factor into the equation.
As far as the "wait 'em out" strategy of bear management, it seems we have found the line which kicks that from the Only Option to Stupid Idea... and that line is "bears on a runway". It seems one of our furry friends decided to get an up close look at the flying machines at PTI and, for his aeronautical curiosity, got shot... to death. Bears N The Hood? Cool. Bears Near A Plane? Unacceptable.
Was he a neighborhood bear? We don't know. Turns out the one near my house and the one in the Krispy Kreme tree were two different bears. I am not sure if that makes things worse or better. All I know is that I am not a fan of living in Bear Country. And if I would have been on a camping trip where bears were on site, camping trip over. Plus, he ate the chocolate! How rude of him. What have we learned in all of this? ( ... )

ROFL! I wish I could say I was shocked or outraged by this, but I've become jaded, and it does not surprise me, in the least. Besides, bears snooping around planes might be terrorists, whereas neighborhood bears are probably just holding it down.

Heh, it's easy to say camping trip over, but we were a mile above where the rafts were (which was more like a seven mile hike down the canyon, in actuality), and once you got to the rafts, we were STILL in the middle of nowhere, Utah. So we were pretty much out of luck on that one. Eating the M&M trail mix WAS incredibly rude, though. I don't want raisins or dried apricots, I want chocolate, dammit!

The sad part is that the Bears were in the conference championship game last year, and I still give them close to no credit. Luckily, I doubt there will be a full football season this year, so I don't have to watch them come crashing back to earth. At least, not for a whole season.
