So, here I was , all ready to break out my big old "Boo-hoo! Lost is ending!"-slash-"So, I just watch a bit of True Blood" post, when I saw something crazy on the post-Survivor news
( Read more... )
Wha...what...in what universe is it okay for a grown-ass adult to beat the hell out of anyone, let alone a thirteen year old that they were supposed to be teaching? There are so many lines being crossed in that scenario that I just can't even bring myself to care whether or not the kid "deserved" it...it's just not right, no matter how you look at it. O.o
(Sorry for my late reply. The computer has been dead for three days, so I have not been around since I posted this.) Obviously, I'm with you. I can understand that being a teacher is a frustrating deal, but what happened in that video is uncalled for on every conceivable level. If you saw an adult beating another adult like that, you'd be shocked... but a child? There is not much I could think of that that child could have done that could have merited anything even close to such a reaction. And since he did not seem to have a gun, and the other kids weren't fleeing the room in fear of their lives, I'd say he did not do any of those things. And even if he did, and they were, there would have been countless more acceptable, and less violent, ways to subdue him.
I am not yet awake enough to have a coherent opinion on this (let's just say I'm in your camp, here), but I was struck by this:
"Wait. Corporal punishment is still legal somewhere?"
If it were still legal, Texas would certainly be the place. Remember, this is the same state that lets you keep loaded guns on your dashboard while you drink a beer. While driving. Or says it's okay to shoot someone dead, just because they set foot on your property. Nice going, Texas!
Wow. Remind me to never go to Texas. Of course the fact that when I think of Texas, my first thoughts include "man, it's hot", "that would be along drive" and "George W.Bush came from there" mean I most likely never will. But still, that's some handy information to keep in the back of one's mind... just in case.
So yeah, they're pretty much an all-around fail. Austin is a nice town. And I hear San Antonio is good, too. But having only two smallish-sized, good cities in a state so large is still a losing effort, in my book.
Hey, who doesn't love a good outrage! I knew that a few people on my friends list are also educators, and hoped that they would not also be like, "lol. beatdown!" Thankfully, that has not been the case. I actually have four friends who work in schools, and I was starting to get worried that deep down, all teachers want to beat on their students. I understand that it can be a frustrating, thankless job. But if you go in every day and you have to restrain yourself from literally putting the boots to a kid, maybe teaching is not the thing for you. I know I am too impatient for the job, and that's why I don't do it. But even if I did, by some chance, end up as a teacher, I'd never wake up and think, "Today is a good day to stomp someone." As I said in a comment above, if I'd have seen that same scenario, only it was two adults, I'd still be taken aback. But to have the victim be a kid? That's just ridiculous. And I know it was one of those special schools for "troubled kids", but that is no excuse. I just checked back in on the story, to see

I know. As I said, they are both pretty smart people, and I will never be convinced that they actually believe what they were saying. If so, they need new jobs, ASAP. He (Friend1) likes to make big statements, and sometimes I think he just says things for shock value. That's why I told them both that it seemed like they were just saying things to be controversial. Though, in a case like this, arguing from the point of "yes, that is perfectly fine" is not being the devil's advocate or seeing things from the other side, it's just wrong. And stupid. I don't understand. Of course now, I look at his facebook page and since this conversation, he has posted three separate videos of people fighting, with comments like, "Why didn't someone do something?" Are you kidding me! I don't even know what to say. And I know for a fact that if any of his kids came home and a teacher would have even so much as smacked them on the back to hard, he'd be in the Principal's Office in half a heartbeat. There is nothing he can say to convince me otherwise. Like

O_O
No! It is NOT a matter of opinion! TEACHERS CANNOT BEAT UP THEIR STUDENTS. THAT IS OBJECTIVELY MORALLY WRONG.
