look at that... she's talking about music again.

So, while looking through Squerb's amazingly amazing picspam of rock stars of the 60s and 70s, I realized I need a new band. (You know you can tell if a picspam is good? Okay, normally the answer is "if I bother to look at it". But, today, under present circumstances, the answer is, "if I wait ages and ages for it to load even though I am back on ( Read more... )

i should be working, people who don't suck, music: pink floyd, music and stuff

Yeah, the 27s is a pretty weird phenomenon. All told 34 musicians died at that eponymous age. I'm the author of "The 27s," an illustrated book that's coming out this fall, which is basically telling the history of rock & roll seen through the lives and legacies these musicians. Check it out at the27s.com if you're interested.
peace and thanks for letting me post.

You know, you didn't need to explain who Robert Johnson was to me. Do you know why? Because I already knew who he was and the whole "legend" behind him.

Do you know how I knew? I think you do.

Anyway, I would go with the Stones because Forty Licks is pretty freakin' awesome.

Ha! At first I was like "Wait. Do I"? when I remembered... when I was making my way through his Wikipedia entry (because all I really knew about him was that Eric Clapton everyone loves him and he supposedly made a deal with the devil) I came across what I think you are talking about. And I almost mentioned it in the actual entry, but then that would count as content relating to things on the CW... and we both know how I feel about that.

Yeah it is! (Though I think it is missing "Waiting On A Friend". I have an issue with that.) I don't know why, but I never got into them as much as all of the other groups of that time (I really think it is because of the whole still-playing-music-when-I-was-a-kid thing.) But, as soon as my Exile on Dial-Up (see what I did there?) is done, I will work on finding more Stones things to listen to.

Okay, so while I do like Pink Floyd quite a bit, I cannot answer your questions. I would not be surprised is Waters and Gilmour had a thing since Roger Waters was pretty much an irascible bastard, but I don't know for sure. But, as far as I know, Roger's big beef was with the fans. As I understand it, the entire idea for the The Wall tour was that Waters didn't want to look at all the fans that disgusted him for the entire show. And yes, Syd Barrett was insane.

As for albums, I'm sorry about "Have a Cigar," but you should really just get the entire Wish You Were Here album. It's one of their best, in my humble opinion, and-if there are any lowlights-the only possible down spot is the title track, itself (although, that song has a special place in my heart, so I can't dislike it). Also, get Animals. It's a short one-only about 5 or 6 songs, though I can't remember if it's technically an EP or not (some songs are LOOOOONG)-but they're all phenomenal. Plus, flying giant inflatable pig photographs! Can't go wrong, there ( ... )

Look at me responding to posts from ages ago. It's what I do!
Ha! That thing about not wanting to look at the fans is a notch in the pro-Waters column! I shall have to remember that.
I am working on "getting" Wish You Were Here now. I looked up the track list and it a great chunk of it is on Echoes. (I am pretty sure that this is because there are only 5 tracks, so even if there were just 2 on there it would be "almost half"). But, the version of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is, according to Wikipedia "An edited version of the song to incorporate both halves of the song.". So now there's gonna be that weird thing where I get used to it being on way and now it's gonna be a different one. But "Have A Cigar" and "Wish You Were Here" are in my top 5 Floyd songs, so I am pretty sure this album is gonna be one of the best. I shall report back later with my official opinion.
I think you may be on to something with the whole "why musicians" die young" thing. Especially back then when it was harder to actually make it big. I had a whole point ( ... )

I vote Floyd, and it's not because I don't like the Stones. I LOVE the Stones. But it does sound like you really want to immerse yourself, and Floyd's definitely got that intrigue about them. Waters was really the genius of the band post-Syd, like an auteur maybe, and my feeling is there were some band control issues with Gilmour. (I read the book A Saucerful of Secrets, btw.)

And...DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. Seriously.

My library does not have A Saucerful of Secrets! They should work on that.
As per your suggestion, I just finished getting Dark Side of The Moon. It's one of those lame "all one big file" things, which is bad for moving to the next track, but good for hearing it as it was meant to be heard. (As soon as the car gets rolling again, I can actually leave the house and find a legit copy. From what I've heard, there is a lot going on in their CD booklets, so I feel that the packaging is an integral part of the Pink Floyd experience.) AS I told mole above (in reference to Wish You Were Here), once I give it a few good listens, I shall report back with my findings and opinions.
