Well, in the objective sense, nothing is a right. There's no Earth-given right to food and water; we have to take them, and usually from someone or something else who needs them too. But I've come to see rights as a way of stating what we as a civilization decide make up the minimum tolerable standard of living. In 1800 a lot of things we now consider basic rights were not seen as such.
Exactly. Unfortunately, those who get into the stupid right vs. privilege argument are missing the point, which is how can we make sure everyone's needs are met?
