GamerGate and Diversity

Oct 28, 2014 09:15

A week or two back, some GamerGate folks put together the following graphic to try to prove … something. I think this was meant to go along with #NotYourShield, and to show that GamerGate is inclusive and diverse and so on, whereas four of the people who have spoken out against GamerGate are white men. So there!

I didn't realize 'jock' was a gender now. Sorry, that jumped out at me.

(Also, Vox Day is one of those people that, should I find him on my side, I will have to question whether I am on the right side, given how much odious shit he has said in the past.)

YES, this.

I had a brief doubt in my love of Umberto Eco when I discovered VD was a fan.

I suppose even Hitler loved dogs.

I'd have had a second thought there too, though.

That is brilliant!! I love the hoisting with their own petard sort of pushback, since it's pretty hard to argue with "these people said these things." (Though, clearly, someone is always willing to try ( ... )

...but personally I wouldn't mind having a set of attack ninjas in there for moments like these.

Thank you. My monitor needed cleaning anyway, though Earl Grey would not have been my solvent of choice...

I can't imagine he and Tunney would get along all that well, though I could be wrong.

Each might think of the other as a useful idiot, to the extent that they think of each other in the first place.

What I find amusing is the "no, you are" technique, which most of us abandoned in kindergarten/grade school. It's apparently a GOP strategy too, some real sharp strategists. Maybe they should stick to Stratego.

Cherry picking participants and pretending they represent the majority is a common fallacy as well, so we've got tu quoque/red herring and a fallacy of composition.

Also, any realistic shot of anti-gamergate proponents should include Anita Sarkeesian and Brianna Wu (and possibly Frank?), and Felicia Day to be remotely accurate. Of course, even if one didn't do that, I'm pretty sure a *random* sampling of GamerGaters would be wildly male and mostly white, and a random sampling of anti-gamergaters would be more mixed.

To say both sides of the first graphic are remarkably cherry picked is to understate.

Not to mention a whole slew of feminist bloggers who have been posting about this since before it was termed "Gamer Gate."

This also disappears the fact that any woman who speaks up is risking being doxxed and threatened with rape and death in retaliation. The prominent white men speaking up are taking some flak for it from GG'ers, but not anywhere near the level that women are.

Well, yes, but if they wanted THIS graphic to focus entirely on demographic representation, as they will claim they do despite the troll below, they would claim the death threats and doxxing, and their suspiciously focused targets are irrelevant. I can't really think they are since they're the core of the thing, but I could anticipate the twisted logic.

I never realized that in addition to needing two canes, a leg brace and a walker, that my State of Michigan handicapped hang tag also gives me carte blanch to be a homophobic, racist, misogynist asshat. That wasn't in the folder I got from the Secretary of State and I didn't get the memo.

I guess I have a lot of studying to do to get up to speed.
