I'm traveling back in time from late September 2012 to give you a response to this question. I actually accidentally got spoiled for the TV show aspect of the story, but I think it held up well without that surprise anyway. (It's pretty obvious early on that that's what's going on.) I enjoyed the novel, but the codas left me a bit cold. Surprising as lots of people whose taste resembles mine really liked the codas

Huh. I'm annoyed that I didn't think of that. I don't recall them ever doing this with the original Star Trek series, but there's certainly precedence in Next Generation, at least. And given that the writers knew the effects of their stories, it would have made sense...
It would have worked well with his setup that Intrepid was a series like Star Trek, but really, really, really badly written. Oh, well.
Sadly, although often the ideas I come up with to "fix" books I've read are things I can save and use myself, I'm pretty sure I won't be writing the right type of metafiction for this idea.
