First Book Friday: Seanan McGuire

Oct 15, 2010 09:30

Welcome to First Book Friday, an ongoing series exploring how various authors sold their first books.

Seanan McGuire, a.k.a. Mira Grant, is this year’s winner of the Campbell Award for Best New Writer.  She’s also a skilled musician.  Plus she draws awesome comics :-)  Basically, Seanan is who you’d get if SF/F were a superpower.

I'm enjoying the Toby Daye series. Still need to get my hands on a copy of Feed, though!

Basically, Seanan is who you’d get if SF/F were a superpower.

So she gets to have the Superman theme playing in the background when she's around?

I believe what I found the most interesting about this story is that it was your first novel --rewritten many times after each successive novel-- that was the one that got sold. I wonder how often that happens.

Hmph. Seanan writes and sings her own theme music.

First of all, thank you Seanan for sharing your experiences. I love learning about successes like yours, but I also love learning about the hard work.

Thanks, Jim, for hosting these first-book Fridays. It's so interesting to see how many different paths there are to the same destination.

You're welcome! That's part of what I've been hoping to share: that there are many different paths, but also some commonalities (one of the biggest being how many years authors spend working to get to that first published novel).
