Hi!

I'm afraid I don't know ginmar at all, but had stumbled upon your livejournal due to some link, and decided to friend you for your interesting and thought-provoking posts. One day I'll hopefully even get around reading your books. *g*

That works too, and thank you :-)

So, mind if I ask what's up with the cow in the icon? I am intrigued...

That's from a TV show, Wonderfalls (by Bryan Fuller and Tim Minnear; unfortunately it was cancelled after thirteen episodes). Basically, all sorts of figurines start talking to the main character and give her strange tasks, which usually lead to a better outcome for everyone concerned. Since she's rather sarcastic and not a natural born do-gooder and nearly everyone around her is rather eccentric, the show is both hilarious and quite quirky. The guy with the cow is the main character's brother and he's trying to get her to admit she's talking to the figurines.

Ah - thank you. Sounds like a run show!

It sucks how many good ones get canned early. (I'm having a moment of silence for Firefly. Again...)

I've been meaning to friend you for a while, I sometimes just have a thing about friending people I've never really interacted with. Also, I reviewed your first two books for RT and really like them. One of these days, I'll have time to read the rest--they're on my TBR shelf.

Oh cool! Very glad you liked them, and thank you for the reviews!

I know what you mean. Online "friending" ettiquette is a strange beast, and as far as I can tell, everyone's rules are a little different.

It really is a strange beast and I know that my social anxiety makes it even stranger--I write lots of comments and then never post them, which I am working on but in the meantime it's super-annoying (luckily, not for anyone but me). And I think LJ's use of the word "friend" really adds a layer of weirdness that doesn't need to be there.

"I think LJ's use of the word "friend" really adds a layer of weirdness that doesn't need to be there."

Oh, definitely. I think Twitter comes closer with "Followers," though that's still not perfect. But I don't know of a concise way to say "List of folks whose blogs I enjoy reading..." Someone yesterday mentioned that Dreamwidth's "Reading Circle" works well, too.

I've actually seen your posts linked a few times from different people, but yesterday finally got the courage to add you. So, uh, hi. :)

I'm really excited about the book!

Hi, and welcome!

Wait, you mean it takes courage to add me? This from someone with a big ol' shark on the LJ icon? I must be more intimidating than I realized ;-)

I've seen your posts for some time now, but the post mentioned by ginmar was the last straw -- I just had to add you to my reading list (aka "friending").

Welcome, and thanks!

Reading your user bio, I thought pandas weren't technically bears? Or have I been misinformed? (Regardless, I like the user ID!)

You're partly correct; pandas are now considered to be related to bears, based on molecular studies -- they are now classified in Ursidae. However, the giant panda is not related to the red panda, except as carnivores in mammalia. The classification of giant pandas had gone back and forth for several years (just what scientists love to do! Argue!). I'm sure there will be further arguing as someone else discovers yet another way to determine classification and uses it to split versus lump.

The name arose separately from the user bio, and I didn't stop to think how confusing it would be. In this case, I fall back on my favorite quote from Walt Whitman. ;-)
