Every year, author Brenda Novak holds an online auction to raise money for diabetes research. She's aiming to raise over $300,000 this year. As someone who's been shooting up with insulin for more than 10 years, I heartily support this. My father is also diabetic, and the genetic component means my boy has a higher chance than average of getting

They got over $40K in the first day. And I've been happily surprised by how well my little auctions are doing over there.

I don't know if the author can (legally) completely waive copyright and release work into the public domain and I'm not a lawyer, but I suspect anyone who distributed their work labeled that way would have a hard time recovering any sort of damages.

As far as CC licenses go, you may be interested in the JMRI model railroad software case. The details concern a different free license applied to software, but it still concerns copyright.
