Well, technically, the names Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are all names of Roman gods, first and foremost. The planets were named after them ;)!

That is true, but still...if suddenly they're say, not planets, then all those corporate logos who have been touting these orbs in the sky as their "image", might suddenly confuse people.

Ah well, I prefer Mythology to Astronomy anyway! ^_^

I heard that they were planning on making an asteroid a planet, plus that Xena thing beyond Pluto a planet, so I guess just demoting Pluto is a lot less shocking than what they could have done. But still shocking nonetheless. So now we only have eight planets in the solar system? What about all those planet mobiles that have pluto sticking out there? What about Magic School Bus visits the solar system? ALL LIES!
