So Emily told me to read Hero by Perry Moore and I did. In one sitting? Yes.

Drive by synopsis: Gay kid is child of defamed Superhero, develops (not particularly showy) superpowers, tries out for the JLA resident Superhero team, gets drafted by Speed, tries to keep The Gay AND the heroing in the closet, stuff happens, world is saved.

HERO managed to please and piss me off simultaneously... )

comics, gay, the rant pants, bibliophilia, half-assed reviews

! Yeah, aside from the GIANT INFODUMP FROM MOM that was probably the biggest thing that rubbed me the wrong way...but whatev. I just. I stopped paying attention to that part of it after a while. And I DO think it's different for someone like Thom who was OMGSUPERHERO/SONOFSUPERHERO and was in the public eye a lot, so I could excuse part of that. And I know that a lot of Thom came from the author himself, and he may have experienced similar things, etc. MOSTLY I'M MAYBE MAKING EXCUSES A LITTLE BECAUSE I LIKED THIS BOOK MORE THAN I SHOULD HAVE PROBABLY ( ... )

I HAVE read Empress of the World. A long time ago. I think I should totally reread it. I...don't remember a lick of it. EXCEPT WASN'T THERE A PUPPET OR SOMETHING idk.

It seems like the overwhelming majority of lesboteen books I've read are just TRAGIC and the relationships never end happily ever after. They are all very depressing and that SHOULD NOT BE. ADORABLE GIRL CUDDLES why are you so hard to come by. -_-;

AND ANOTHER GRIPE: When Gayteen McGee falls in love with Hearthrob Smith and spends the whole story MADLY IN LOVE, but Gayteen obviously isn't going to get Heartthrob because Heartthrob's middle name is Straight, so at the end Gayteen hooks up with totally random Queerkid and they totally don't have anything incommon BUT ITS A HAPPY ENDING CUS HE GOT THE GUY even though it's not the one he wanted and it's probably not going to go very well.

I hate that.

I HATE THAT TOO. I'm really glad THAT didn't happen in Hero.

AND YEAH THERE WAS A PUPPET and also adorable girl cuddles and even some heavily implied sex! Gasp.

I think the reason for this is that the authors willing to write 'gay' characters feel they need the story to be 'relatable' and very SENSITIVE to any potential distraught gay readers. Which is quite ridiculous. They don't play Ballerina with hetero love stories. ):

It's pretty dumb. Everyone has their panties in a twist about being politically correct and everyone has to make sure they're not hurting someones feelings.

Kind of like Disney with The Princess and the Frog. :/ The whole, jumping through hoops trying too hard to please EVERYONE... and the product is a boring piece of crap NO one can relate to, remember or have fun with. (NOT that I think PatF will be like that. But I mean, that's often what happens when someone does that.)

I hope that made sense? D: In any case HERE HERE! I demand better gay prose. ): Even though I don't really read it. XD I really do need to read more fiction.
