I suppose I should have actually made the 'say anything to that person' an explicit part of that last sentence. I do sometimes vent about such things to neutral third parties or in anonymized form here.

But if I do that, I try to make sure the person in question is never aware of it.

Yes, and "Because you wouldn't have believed me" isn't a satisfactory answer, even if they know damn good and well it's true. Keeping one's mouth shut and letting the School of Experience be the teacher is indeed the best course in such situations. A little private gloating when you're vindicated is okay, though. :-)
