So... facing an 8 hour train trip at the end of the month, and feeling a yen to listen to music and audiobooks while on the train, I broke down and bought an iPod last week. Not while driving, even if thru your car radio? 90+% of my iPod use is basically time-shifting NPR shows into my commute. To me, that's a good thing.

I guess if I had the little gizmo that let me listen to it through the car radio, it would be okay. (I don't, though, and probably won't get one anytime soon.)

It's just the listening-via-earbuds thing that I vow not to do in situations where it's important for me to be aware of the sounds around me.

I figured you meant that and I agree. In fact, it's illegal to drive in MD with headphones on, so it's not just a good idea: it's the law. :-)
