See? Beanies and gloves!! Idiocy! We have the opportunity to celebrate our summer solstice - really, Aussies shagging on the beach, gorging on fresh fruit and seafood and generally getting flogged and enjoying themselves isn't that far removed from what has been traditionally celebrated at Midsomer. But there's this niggling cultural cringe that brings out the fake snow, and the winter carols, and the movie features that thematically at least do all the Yule-y things - death, rebirth, redemption.

The most cringeworthy example of this I ever saw was a Christmas Lights display featuring penguins, polar bears, Santa in a scarf, sparkly icicles and a snowy, frosted tree, all wedged onto a quarter acre of fake white snow, miles and miles of polyester batting about as natural as the rest of the scene. And the owners on lawn chairs in singlets and short-shorts, chowing down on an iceblock with the electric fans on them.

How hard is it to have a summer festival when it's 30+ outside?? Really??

"How can that meme cover so many variables?" I wondered. 129 questions is how!
