Most of the tomato plants thrived while I was away. Some of the fruits are nearly ripe now -- I think they'll be ready to eat within a few days

Damn! I really don't know how to make them grow more... but you might be right. Ours grew fruit, then we made sure they were shady and continued to keep them watered, and they grew some more!
