Oh Rose from The Vampire Academy is definitely an interesting character (in my opinion). I'm with you about YA vampire books - I've read Twilight, Marked [from the House of Night Series] and The Vampire Academy. I can tell you that I did like Twilight (though I'm not a die hard - and I read books for fun, not to majorly critique them) and The Vampire Academy was fantastic. It's got a different twist on vampires with a lore of their own. Rose is a headstrong character who admits to making mistakes, but she's just so strong. I don't know how much information is too much - but basically her character is different from the rest of the characters, mostly because she has this extraordinary physical and emotional endurance. I got sidetracked by school, so I haven't finished the last two books - but I have them! ha.
Btw, Marked wasn't a good book (again, imo) - I just think it dumbed down teenagers way too much.

I don't know much about awards, but I would love to look into that since I also think the distinction between genres is interesting...
