Me & You

The Doctor walked around the console, trying to ignore the quiet that surrounded him. He hadn’t seen Rose in quite awhile and it was bothering him. No, no he wasn’t bothered - just curious. Maybe.

It felt too warm in the Tardis. She usually sat at a perfect temperature, but still, the Doctor shrugged off his leather jacket and swinging it on one of the coral struts. He tried to focus on the screen in front of him, but he found that he couldn’t concentrate. A sigh saturated with irritation escaped him. With a shake of the head, he started walking towards the library.

On his way there, he noticed blinking lights coming from the kitchen. There was also a delicious smell of something baking. Had Rose decided to bake for him? His lips instantly morphed into a brilliant grin as he sped up his steps to what was waiting for him.

Once he turned the corner, however, he realized that Rose was not in the kitchen and that those blinking lights and the baking had been initiated by the Tardis herself.

“What the…,” he started.

Well, someone had to do it. Daft, old Time Lord…

“Oi!” he shouted, clearly offended and confused at what his machine was thinking at him.

She remained silent.

His brow lifted as he was expecting an answer. The Doctor walked to inspect the lights strung about the room. They twinkled purple and pink. It reminded him of a planet he had traveled to before…well, before. He turned away and started walking toward the oven where the cake was sitting atop. With each step his heavy boots gave a deep thud on the floor.

What is going on, he thought.

He finally stood over the cake, which was white and decorated in blue swirls and purple roses with edible ball bearings sprinkled around it (oh, how he loved those things!). And that’s when he realized, looking at the icing and its curves and filigree, just why there was a cake decorated in young and fresh colors. Why there were strings of lights blinking away…almost mocking him.

It was Rose’s birthday.

No wonder he hadn’t seen her all day - she was probably upset.

A deep feeling in his ancient bones told him that birthdays were the padding to life, pointless…so very…human.

But an even deeper emotion, this one nestled both between and within his hearts, made him upset with himself. The fact that he’d forgotten his….well, Rose’s birthday caused a peculiar feeling in his chest.

Instantly and with swiftness, he turned and walked towards her room. Once there he didn’t bother knocking and simply yanked the door open. He knew once it did open without the use of his sonic screwdriver (if she was upset she would have locked the door, of course) that she wouldn’t be in there.

With an exasperated huff, he moved to walk toward his next guess.

It was room bit farther down the corridor. It held a large screen television with releases from the past, present and future. Rose had always been particular with those of the past. He smiled at recent memories of them watching black and white films as well as the occasional 1980s movie (what a horrid decade that was…).

The Doctor walked carefully so his boots would not make even a whisper. He peered in, and sure enough, he saw Rose - still in her jim jams - her hair piled up messily on her head, staring at the screen in front of her. She was watching Sixteen Candles…again. The Doctor feared, however, that the movie meant something quite different for her this time.

How would he make this up to her?

Why did it even mean this much to him that he’d forgotten her birthday?

Perhaps he’d been spending too much time on earth recently.

He walked into the room; the image of a young girl sitting in a half-finished car, being serenaded horribly by a geeky boy was playing on screen.

“Rose…,” he started, not really knowing how he was going to finish it.

Rose turned around to face him and it saddened him to see that her cheeks were wet with tears.

“Hiya Doctor,” she whispered, a poignant smile on her lips as she turned back to the screen.

He didn’t know what would have hurt him more, her yelling at him or her indifference just then.

It was a close call, he decided.

Without a word, he walked around the sofa and sat down next to her. Her feet were curled up underneath and she snuggled a pillow - away from him.

And there he sat, each moment wondering how he would make it up to her. Which planets and markets he’d take her to, the trinkets he’d get her and the attention he would most certainly place only on her.

So concentrated was he on his thoughts that he didn’t notice when the movie had ended and the fact that Rose had been staring at him for quite awhile.

He felt her look after a bit and when he turned to look at her, she surprised him with an almost-brilliant smile. The Doctor couldn’t help but mirror her with one of his own.

“Sorry?” he wanted to say so much more…always so much more to her and he couldn’t bring himself to open the floodgate. Not yet.

Rose’s grin widened a little more as she switched from snuggling the pillow to turning and snuggling into his side. The Doctor felt his heartbeats funny rhythm and it made him catch his breath. Her body seemed to fit so perfectly. Each curve of hers met every line of his. He placed his hand on the curve of her lower back and she squirmed just a bit beneath his touch. It made his mouth go dry and he had to swallow hard.

“It’s ok Doctor, never did have the best of luck on my birthday,” she mumbled into his jumper. Her voice made vibrations against his skin and the warmth of her breath made him tremble.

And just like that, he had the sudden urge to kiss her. Maybe it was the way her body was sprawled half on top of him or the way she forgave him so effortlessly. Maybe it was because it was her birthday and yet she seemed content just being with him. It could be that it was all of these things.

Or maybe it was because it was Rose. Just Rose. Pink and yellow, very human, caring and loving Rose Tyler.

He nudged at her, causing her to look up at him. Her wide eyes were on his
and they were shining and she looked just the tiniest bit tired. The Doctor lifted a hand to her face, swiping invisible tears from her cheeks and tracing the edge of her cheek down to her chin and up to her lips. He noticed her eyes widen even more, but he ignored the incredulity of them for the moment. Instead, he outlined the lines of her lips, from the corner to the pouting plump heart-shape of the center. His fingertip lingered there and he involuntarily licked his lips.

With a swiftness that surprised even him, he dipped down and touched his lips to hers - softly caressing them with his. Rose stood still for a moment and then tentatively responded to him. Their lips met with a gentle sweetness that made his hearts beat erratically. He knew she could feel them under her hand. The kiss grew deeper as he licked her lips in anticipation. She opened up for him, her tongue mingling with his. He tasted her, a sweet flavor that reminded him of time and space. It was the stardust that surrounded him wherever he was - the celestial atmosphere that followed him even when he had his feet planted firmly on the ground. It was her. It was Rose.

The Doctor slowly separated himself from Rose, his breaths coming and leaving from deep within him. His and Rose’s breath fused between them and for a moment, neither said a word.

“Rose, I…I…,” he stammered, unusually confused, “I….”

She smiled up at him, her warm brilliant smile.

“What, Doctor?” a teasing tone was in her voice, her tongue pressed against her teeth. It made him smile. It made his insides do flips.

At a loss for something to say, he smiled sheepishly and said what came to mind, “Happy Birthday, Rose. Guess…I’m breaking all the rules now…” He trailed off, not sure what was going to happen next. The only thing he knew suddenly was that he didn’t want to lose her.

“Doctor?” her voice was sweet and still a bit teasing in its tone.

“Yes, Rose?” It couldn’t possibly be something bad, her voice was ripe with laughter.

“If there is one thing I know, Doctor, it’s that rules? Yea’ rules were made to be broken,” and with a quickness that even he couldn’t muster around her, she reached up for him and pulled him down for another kiss.
