I don't know if it has more to do with the particular moment in time, or just the age that I was, but the songs that were top 40 hits when I was in middle school (1993-1996) have this amazing staying power -- I can go for literally years without hearing it, and then a song like "Breakfast at Tiffany's" comes on my shuffle, and I can sing along to ( Read more... )

I LOVE that kind of commute! I hate when it's too warm to drive to work with the windows down in the mornings here (so, like, half the year).

Maybe I'm biased, but that was by far the best period for top 40 music. Man. I miss that.

Right?! I mean, we are the same age, so...yeah. And I guess middle school was actually 1994-5 through 96-97. Anyway. Looking back on the 90's, it's kind of precious how angsty everyone was. It's like, whoa, just you wait. And the music of the 2000's was/is either way angry or way escapist. But I feel very comforted by the nostalgic angst of the previous generation :)

Music in the 90's was particularly awesome, in multiple genres such as hip hop, alternative, triphop, etc. Music these past 10 yrs has been pretty mediocre. It has a lot to do with society and politics. Basically since Obama has been elected, the masses (well, maybe not the republicans) have been pacified and are generally hopeful about things (as evidenced by the economy and real estate picking up again), which unfortunately doesn't spawn very much memorable music. Just cookie cutter bullshit like Pharrell's happy song, which I will be quite happy to forget as soon as its off the radio.
