A few days ago, I got the details on my friend Geoff's death.  He had been in the hospital with diabetes complications.  He had been in the ICU and needed to stay there...but he didn't have health insurance, and so he was discharged.  He died as soon as he got home.  Geoff had a good job and good income, but his diabetes precluded him from health ( Read more... )

So, so sorry to hear about your friend :( I can't even imagine how it must be to lose a friend and know that it could most likely have been prevented like that, holy crap.

This is the number one reason I got 100% set on returning home when I graduate. I love living in the US, I love the people in my life here, but the politics just isn't something I want to deal with (And unfortunately I can't quite see it changing anytime soon!)
After the experiences I had being pregnant here and having issues affording my meds, yeah, it brought up the "Ding ding, go home!" for me. (And making me ridiculously grateful that I have that option)

I am terribly sorry for your friend's passing.

I was always paying OUT OF POCKET for my health insurance, which back in 1998 was 275.00 and then last year was 500. I no longer could afford it with all my legal shit and so now I am basically left without it. If something happens to me, I'm fucked. I'm currently looking into a plan that's less than 300 dollars, but it really pisses me off to think here we are the developed nation in the world and tons of people are left to die or rot or won't be cared for because they have no insurance. The other day I had to go to the doctor for some skin medicaton and the fucking bill was 150 dollars, if I had insurance it would have been a copay of 20 and insurance would take care of 80% of it.
