Shocker: I didn't like the most recent COMMUNITY episode

I try not to be one of those fans, but last night's Community episode prompted me to find my inner Comic Book Guy and say, "Worst. Episode. Ever." That's probably a bit unfair and hyperbolic, but it's certainly true to say there's never been an episode of Community I enjoyed less than "G.I. Jeff."

A large part of my dissatisfaction stems from its ( Read more... )

petty complaints, tv: community, fandom

Thank heavens I'm not the only person who's frustrated with the sloppy retcon! I got into a fight with people about this on Facebook, multiple things established him to be about 35/36 at this point in the series, and they can't ALL be explained away by "Jeff is a liar."

Also, HOW could he lie to his father? He, presumably, knows how old he was when Jeff was born.

Plus, his father and mother were married from 1975-1983 [2.16] which means under the new retconned chronology, he was born 2 years before they married, and he was already a well-established single-parent kid earlier than 10 years old [1.19, 3.09]. And in digging up all that info on Jeff's father, Pierce never found out Jeff's real age? And didn't use it against him? In spite of spending the entire season trying to take him down?

And another thing! From the foosball episode:

SHIRLEY: I was 12 years old!
JEFF: I peed! I had to change schools! I changed everything--my clothes, my hair, my personality--because of you! What a waste! I wish I could take a picture of you right now and send it to my ten-year-old self.

So either Shirley is actually 42 and she's known Jeff's been lying about his age ever since the 3rd season, or Jeff was really 14 when he got sent to tinkle-town. Neither is remotely plausible.

As has been pointed out to me by the episode's defenders, Shirley is the only one to say "we already knew that" in the episode, so presumably she has known since season 3 ( ... )

My other big problem is that I'm not sure why they decided to retcon his age. I refuse to believe the show runners are ignorant of their fanbase enough to think that Jeff/Annie shippers care about their age difference now that Annie's over 21. Jeff would've been old enough to be a G.I. Joe fan at his former age. And people don't just have age crises at round numbers! It's a giant continuity mess unbecoming of "Community ( ... )
