At the very essence of the issue, it becomes a question of original source text: should "fans" (read all of us) boycott a show because, in the opinion of some viewers (possibly the majority), it is: historically inaccurate and suggests racist/sexist/misoygynistic/homophobic/heterosexist themes etc. which makes viewers feel uncomfortable?

Name one - name one fandom that isn't historically inaccurate and suggests racist/sexist/misoygynistic/homophobic/heterosexist themes. There aren't any. (Everyone's a little bit racist!). And if there was one carefully crafted to tick all the pc boxes, it would be so dull no one would watch it. Like those hideous novels for young adults that were written to help us cope with puberty/parentl divorce/bullying etc. There's a reason kids run away from such plastic creations to someone like JK Rowling who isn't out to preach, but can tell a good story.

Thank you! I need say no more on that point. And your comment about "being so dull no one would watch it" is spot on. In fact, up above txvoodoo makes a similar point in a recent comment. We watch television for its entertainment value; if I want to be preached at or feel virtuous, I'll go to chuch or volunteer!

And yes, the OP does seem to have mixed up a lot of issues in one post; she's obviously unhappy about all of her SGA fans discovering Merlin. Well, sweetie -- you don't have to follow everyone else. Go find something that makes you happy!

Well friends wandering off into different fandoms over time is what happens. I started out with a flist that was monolithically about Highlander. Then we all started getting involved in other fandoms as they came along, some of which I could follow and some I couldn't. And vice versa. And you know what? We're still friends. It's nothing to worry about.

If we were to do that, there would be nothing to watch...period. You said it yourself - Moreover, there is *no* perfect show. It's as simple as that. If someone wishes to be on a high horse and bitch about a particular show, here's my suggestion to them: Change the channel or turn the TV off and read a book. (Although if they're going to bitch about a TV show, they will likely pick at a book too.)

I feel like telling a lot of people that. To have such wank and fuss is ridiculous because all shows have imperfections and some thrive on being imperfect. :)
