I'm sure to has to do with ginning up revenue. They want to attract new people. Corporations always want more money. The changes haven't fundamentally affected the way I use LJ. Filters and the friends page are the main thing for me.

Same here. I don't mind the change so much. What I really like is the quiet pace at which my friends page updates here. This place doesn't make me obsessed about checking my feeds at all times.

I think a lot of companies worry that if they do not change things and make them fresh and different somehow, people will lose interest and/or they will not attract new users. It's almost like a rock and a hard place.

There seems to be a right and a wrong way to do it. LiveJournal seems to be doing it wrong, same as Slashdot. Amazon is not the same Amazon as 10 years ago or even 15 years ago, but no one really complains about the new amazon page because they simply tweak it a little bit every day in minor ways that people rarely notice and you THINK you're getting the same experience each time.
